Layered Tech Adds DEFCON For VMs (October 16, 2008) - On-demand IT infrastructure provider Layered Technologies (www.layeredtech.com) has extended its DEFCON managed services product line to include virtual machines, giving Grid Layer virtual machine customers the same advanced services available to dedicated server clients.
According to Layered Tech's announcement Thursday, the innovation is a result of the company's virtualization investments and recent acquisition of FastServers.net which has helped drive its DEFCON managed services across its broad range of products, including virtual machines.
DEFCON managed services simplify the operation of hosted infrastructure, providing a single server administration source, service-level based support, 24x7 monitoring and recovery, patch management, and security. DEFCON is also available with Layered Tech's on-demand, dedicated server solutions based on CentOS, Red Hat, and Windows 2003.
"The extension of DEFCON managed services to our Grid Layer virtual machines is another powerful value-creating tool for our customers," Layered Tech chief marketing officer John Pozadzides said in a statement. "Our roots are as a hosting provider that works closely with customers, and we're continuing to do that in the area of virtualization by giving our customers even greater choice when it comes to defining the amount of security, support, monitoring, and specialized software that is associated with their virtualization environment."
Layered Tech`s DEFCON managed services are tiered, letting customers choose the level of service they want to manage their servers. For instance, Layered Tech says DEFCON 5 is for customers who want to manage all aspects of their server applications, while DEFCON 1 provides the full scope of server management and monitoring.
DEFCON management services are currently available to existing Layered Tech customers who already use Grid Layer VMs and those who migrate from a dedicated server environment to a virtualization platform. DEFCON for Grid Layer VMs includes an operating system such as CentOS and a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk. However, control panel management services are available through Layered Tech for a fee.
Two weeks ago, Layered Tech announced the completion of physical network improvements that have allowed the company to offer DEFCON for VMs.
Layered Tech Expands Services (October 1, 2008) - Utility hosting services provider Layered Technologies (layeredtech.com) announced on Tuesday its recently completed network upgrades further strengthen its ability to meet the needs of enterprise-class customers for traditional and virtualization platforms, while positioning Layered Tech to effectively manage its rapid growth.
The company has made many network investments, including expanding its number of carriers so that customers have a more effective combination of Internet pathways. Level 3 Communications, Global Crossing and Sprint provide Layered Tech's customers with strong overseas access, while SAVVIS, Internap and Time Warner provide US Internet access. Layered Tech also enhanced access between its data centers with 10-gigabit circuits, while it also upgraded its hardware to include new Cisco switches in VSS configuration. These upgrades and improvements have resulted in providing faster, more reliable access for Layered Tech customers."Our rapidly expanding customer base is fueling Layered Tech's network investments whose benefits are particularly attractive to enterprise customers looking for advanced virtualization technologies," says Jack Finlayson, CEO of Layered Tech. "The network upgrade has been a major initiative since our acquisition of FastServers.Net earlier this year. We will continue to evolve our network to meet our customers' needs, but we already know that Layered Tech offers the services, capacity, security and redundancy that other data centers and dedicated hosting providers just can't match."
Layered Tech was able to deploy 150 servers for the customer in less than a week at its Chicago data center, which was best-suited to handle the significant increase because of its enterprise-grade security and redundancy. From its upgraded data centers, Layered Tech can now offer its DEFCON managed services to customers of Layered Tech's Grid Layer virtual machines. Previously, the DEFCON services, which mitigate challenges commonly associated with the operations of hosted infrastructure, were available only to dedicated-server customer. The company also expanded its international presence by adding data centers in Tokyo and Amsterdam, providing overseas customers important local points of presence. It is this overseas expansion that provides Layered Tech with the global reach to meet the hosting needs of the largest multinational companies.Customers will continue to benefit from Layered Tech's ongoing network investments, says Layered Tech CTO Jeremy Suo-Anttila.Layered Technologies says it provides managed dedicated hosting, on-demand virtualization/grid computing and Web services. In July, Layered Technologies chief marketing officer John Pozadzides discussed his then-upcoming HostingCon 2008 presentation, "Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining."
Layered Tech Hires New CIO (July 17, 2008) - On-demand IT infrastructure provider Layered Tech (layeredtech.com) has appointed former FastServers (fastservers.net) chief information officer Terrance Bush as CIO to oversee research and development, as well as technology strategy for the organization.
Layered Tech CEO Jack Finlayson said the new CIO will lend "his technology expertise and leadership experience, combined with the other new additions to our management team," he said in a statement. Other recent staff appointments include CFO John Faulkner and CMO John Pozadzides.
Bush began his career at Chicago-based, managed hosting company FastServers.Net in 2000, where he held a number of management positions before taking becoming CIO in 2003. Prior to arriving at FastServers, Bush held senior positions with Fortune 500 companies, including AT&T and StockPoint (now a division of CBS MarketWatch), where he has amassed over nine years of system administration experience and more than five years in system engineering management.
"I am thrilled to lead the research and development team at Layered Tech," said Bush. "It's an exciting time at the company, as we put our energies into managed hosting and virtualization services, as well as concentrate on servicing the enterprise market."
Layered Tech acquired FastServers.Net in April, causing a potentially tricky integration of the managed dedicated hosting expertise of FastServers.Net with Layered Tech's leading virtualization and on-demand IT infrastructure solutions. Last month, WHIRtv talked with Finlayson at LT PACT 2008, Layered Tech's annual conference, to discuss the company's new virtualization and managed services and overall vision for the company.
