Filling a strategic role for growing UK2's footprint in the UK market, acquiring 1999-founded VI will also help expand VI's leading services in both UK and the US markets, according to UK2's Thursday announcement.
"Our business has been built on delivering outstanding customer service through a highly motivated team of exceptional people," outgoing VI managing director Peter Rees said in a statement. "I am confident that the acquisition by UK2 will allow the customer to feel confident about VI's future going forward and will offer the team the opportunity to build the business into a market dominating brand."
UK2 Group will continue to operate VI as a separate brand, similar to others in a long line of recent acquisitions including WingSix (wingsix.com), midPhase (midphase.com) and Stargate (stargate.com).
UK2.net managing director Martin Baker assured VI customers UK2 that we intend to continue to deliver the products and service levels they associate with VI.net said in a statement, "[I] can assure the . I have been very impressed with the VI team and am looking forward to working with them to build the business in the UK and the US." Baker will be assuming managing director role at VI.
On Thursday, UK2 also announced that it will be introducing a new cloud service called VPS.net (www.vps.net) across the UK2 group, which is expected to be a major addition to VI's offerings.
In October 2000, VI became the first public UK company to gain ICANN accreditation. VI also gained notoriety when it introduced "secure" shared hosting packages, which addressed the security and resilience needs of small business websites.
No stranger to management changes, in May 2003, VI was acquired by Norwegian hosting provider ActiveISP. Shortly after, in 2006, Virtual Internet re-launched following a management buyout by staff and management, now with a renewed focus on dedicated and managed server customers.
UK2 Group Buys WestHost (November 7, 2008) - Completing its program of acquisition-driven growth in the US Hosting Market, British web hosting provider and registrar UK2 Group (www.uk2group.com) has acquired Utah-based WestHost (www.westhost.com) which currently hosts more than 70,000 web sites, according to the announcement.
The company announced Friday that according to the deal, UK2 Group will retain all key personnel and continue to operate WestHost's data center in Salt Lake City and its offices in Logan, Utah.
The UK2 Group began its program of growth-by-acquisition in the US market in December 2007 by acquiring midPhase (www.midphase.com). WestHost's acquisition, the final one of the program, follows those of web hosts Stargate (www.stargate.com) and WingSix (www.wingsix.com). The company said it will now turn its focus to optimizing all its hosting operations and strengthening its overall market position.
"I've followed WestHost for years, and I have always been impressed with their quality of service, respect for their clients and great offerings" UK2 Group managing director and chief executive officer Ditlev Bredahl said in a statement. "I want to assure all WestHost clients that they are not going to see any changes in that kind of personal service. We're keeping the data center in Utah open, because a local presence is important, and we're keeping the excellent staff there"
UK2 Group family of companies includes US2.net, midPhase, 10TB.com, Resell.biz, WingSix, AN Hosting, Autica, Supreme Support, and flagship member UK2.net, which has operated for more than a decade. UK2.net has sold more than one million domain names and currently hosts hundreds of thousands of Web domains. Moving beyond its US strategy, the UK2 Group has also recently acquired Australian reseller-oriented web host Dotable (www.dotable.com).
As part of Westhost's transition to the UK2 Group, the company said it has put together a core team of UK2Group and WestHost management to personally reply to all questions and concerns from WestHost clients.
UK-2 Names Senior Usability Officer (October 15, 2008) - UK Internet solutions provider UK-2 Group (www.uk2.net) announced on Monday it has named Carlos Rego in the company's newly created role of senior usability officer.
In the press release, the specifications of the position and respective duties are somewhat vague, simply stating that "Rego will be responsible for redefining the web hosting end user experience."
Rego is the former managing director of Positive Software automation division of Comodo, which was acquired by Parallels.
"In an industry where many players are as indistinct as the nodes of the Internet, Carlos is one of those rare few who can point out actual achievements," says Ditlev Bredahl, managing director of the UK-2Group. "His work at Positive Software elevated H-Sphere from obscurity to one of the top control panels in the industry. He has demonstrably built up several companies and we look forward to a similar contribution here at UK-2 Group."
Rego was also one of the pioneers of redundant and split web services, which are now industry standards, and implemented software capable of cloud/grid based environments, years before it became a hot topic.
Occasionally in the hosting industry, companies will create an entirely new position, complete with its own unique job title, to fulfill a needed role.
Some companies will create these new positions as a quick fix solution to consolidating several duties into one role, while others develop the new roles to focus and prioritize key activities.
Mosso, Rackspace Hosting's cloud computing division, is another company that recently created a new role, naming 20-year technology veteran Bruce Runyan the company's chief uptime officer.
UK-2 Group provides domain name registration and web hosting services to a wide customer base through its several hosting brands, which include UK2.net, US2.net, Midphase.com and Resell.biz.
Earlier this month, the company announced it recently acquired Web host Dotable, bringing with it over 10,000 domains.
The WHIR recently interviewed Nick Nelson, Dotable co-manager and UK-2 US director of sales and marketing, who discussed UK-2's recent acquisition of Dotable and how the partnership will affect the future of the two companies.
