In the years since pair Networks was founded, much has changed about the company and about the Internet itself. However, the commitment to our mission has never wavered -- provide the highest-quality Web hosting services we possibly can.
A Single Idea
The idea for pair Networks was formed in the summer of 1995. CEO Kevin Martin saw a niche that needed to be filled: a company that focuses exclusively on high-quality, affordable Web hosting. With a 600 square-foot office, a single employee, a partial T-1 line, and a $10,000 family loan, pair Networks was born and went online on January 11, 1996.
That first year was an exciting time. All aspects of the company were being created from scratch, company functions and procedures were being developed, and pair Networks' customer base skyrocketed at a rate that surpassed even the most optimistic projections.
pair Networks Moves Up
By the end of its second year, pair Networks had grown to the point that the small office was no longer adequate, and in January 1998, the company moved to a larger facility. The next two years brought even faster growth -- so much so that by late 1999, pair Networks had once again outgrown its offices and data center space.
In December of 1999, pair Networks completed its second move to a much larger and more scalable location -- the River Park Commons on Pittsburgh's Historic South Side. The company has been in this location for years, and despite non-stop growth, will be able to comfortably expand for quite some time.
What's Changed and What Hasn't
Many facets of the company have changed over the years. At its inception, pair Networks offered only four accounts: FTP, Basic, Advanced, and Webmaster. Those accounts still exist, but now we offer more hosting options and services than ever before.
We still painstakingly build and maintain our core systems in-house as we've done from day one, but we've also partnered with some of the best Web application developers out there such as Movable Type (powerful blogging software) and ShopSite (feature-laden shopping cart application), which gives our customers the ability to develop more dynamic Web sites.
Where We Are Now
pair Networks has expanded from its humble beginning to truly impressive numbers. The original partial T-1 line has been replaced by multiple, ultra-high capacity fiber optic circuits. What was once a single switch is now a multi-layered, redundant local network. And the single 120MHz "powerhouse server" has now become thousands of servers in constant upgrade rotation. That single employee is now an entire team of professionals working 24/7/365 to support our valued customers.
pair Networks continually expands its services and offerings. pairNIC, our domain name registrar, gives our hosting customers a way to register, renew, and transfer their domain names. pairLite gives customers with hobby sites an inexpensive way to host their online projects. Our QuickServe dedicated server and pairColo co-location offerings allow larger organizations and businesses to bring their Web site projects to life. As the months and years go on, pair Networks will launch additional projects that will benefit our customers.
The Future: We're Not Stopping
For all that has changed, the center has not budged, and pair Networks remains as committed to offering the highest-quality Web hosting -- as it did from the first day the lights went on in a small office building in Pittsburgh. It is that recognition of what got us here that will keep us here for a long time to come.
pair Networks operates its own exclusive, custom-built Internet datacenters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Adjoining our headquarters office, the datacenters have been pre-built to accommodate years of growth. The datacenters feature everything necessary to ensure the absolute best in uptime and reliability for your site.
WORLD CLASS NETWORK We operate our own dedicated, multi-homed network in our own datacenters. Our local network is fully-switched and collision-free, while our external connections are GigE (up to 10,000Mbps) to five diverse backbone networks. We use Juniper Networks routers and Foundry Networks switches for wire-speed, rock-solid connectivity to our upstream providers.
Through hand-tuning in addition to BGP route selection, we ensure optimal route selection focused on private peering and automatic failover in the event of outages.
We are continually expanding and upgrading our network for capacity and diversity.

This announcement marks Rackspace's first place showing this year, however, the managed hosting firm known for its "fanatical support" has landed on the top ten for three months in a row between April and June, according to Netcraft data.
This is also ZeroLag's first time topping Netcraft's list this year although it was in the top 10 in June and July. ZeroLag offers virtual hosting, dedicated servers and colocation, and also provides T1 and T3 internet connections, web development and security consulting.
Rackspace and ZeroLag stole the top spot from last month's most reliable hosting company site Hurricane Electric (www.he.net), which has fallen to seventh place this month.
Rackspace and ZeroLag home pages both run Linux along with two other companies on the top ten. green.ch (www.green.ch) uses F5 BIG IP and pair Networks (www.pair.com) uses FreeBSD.
Netcraft's ranking system is based on the number of failed requests. With performance measurements are made at 15-minute intervals from separate points on the globe, Netcraft measures the response times and averages the results each day. The percentage of failed requests is more important to customeres than shortest periods of outage, according to Netcraft, because it gives a pointer to the reliability of their routing.
ShopSite Launches Version 10 (October 20, 2008) - E-commerce shopping cart and catalog software provider ShopSite (www.shopsite.com) has released ShopSite version 10, an industry-leading e-commerce software option for hosting providers, online merchants and Web designers, with the addition of an HTML editor, inventory API, and support for Doba drop shipping service.
"We are excited that ShopSite has achieved the status of a Certified Integration Partner, having recently completed an integration with Doba's product sourcing API," Doba chief executive officer Blaine Nielsen said in a statement. "Their integration gives ShopSite merchants the ability to choose from over 1,000,000 wholesale products that can be simply added to their website with a click of a button and also automates the ordering and drop ship fulfillment process."
ShopSite announced version 10 last week. Previously, the software has been incorporated into many Web hosting offerings including those from hosting giant Verio (www.verio.com), IPOWER (www.ipower.com), FatCow (www.fatcow.com), LexiConn (www.lexiconn.com), pair Networks (www.pair.com) and Globat (www.globat.com).
ShopSite CEO David Hills said the new features will be available in all ShopSite product levels: starter, manager and pro. "Additionally some features previously available only in the top of the line Pro level are now available in Manager," Hills said in a statement. "Manager merchants can now enjoy features such as Google Analytics, Custom Page and Product Fields, and Page Sort."
The Pro release of the software includes a new API for third-party inventory control application developers, enabling merchants to use an add-on application to track and manage product inventory in ShopSite. Otherwise, Pro and Manager customers can use ShopSite's included multiple shipping carrier shipping rate calculator in the shopping cart. Merchants can subscribe for UPS, FedEx, and USPS real-time shipping quotes, which the end-user can select.
Pair Networks Nurtures Web Incubator (July 21, 2008) - Web hosting company pair Networks (pair.com) plans to help entrepreneurs turn their web-based ideas into successful businesses through its new pairIncubator (pairincubator.com), a program offering start-up resources and business expertise in exchange for company share.
According to the announcement last week, the web technology incubator is located at the pair.com headquarters in Pittsburgh and will help participants set up their business, provide the use of hardware and workspace, provide business guidance, and help participants access venture capital.
In exchange, pair Networks requests a small part of each company, but no more than 10 percent. "Relinquishing this small percentage of your company could be the difference between getting your idea off of the ground and just dreaming about it," a company statement said.
Applications for the next incubation session will be closed August 10, 2008 and those chosen will be contacted August 18. Starting with this premiere program, the 12-week programs will be are to be run twice annually - one in spring and one in autumn. Far from a free ride, pairIncubator is designed to make entrepreneurs work, stipulating that they log at least 40 hours per week, preferably in the Pittsburgh location.
Long a staple of entrepreneurs, the idea of the incubator program was applied to software as a service in 2005 when OpSource (opsource.net) introduced its SaaS incubator.
There are more details and a guide to application available on the pairIncubator website.
