Becoming 100% renewable energy powered was a big step for our company. Although one of our data centers was already powered partially by wind, we sponsor many green/ progressive groups and a couple of our offices were already powered by solar and wind energy energy - we wanted to do more, to become fully carbon neutral.
Becoming 100% renewable energy powered
Due to our infrastructure and geographical distribution, we couldn't install solar panels or construct a few wind turbines outside. It's also incredibly expensive. So, what to do? We weren't going to give up in our goals of becoming a very "green" web hosting service and we also didn't want to pass on extra costs associated with going greener to our clients!
Through an extensive audit, we calculated the electricity usage of our servers and staff offices, then purchased the necessary wind and solar green energy tags. There are a number of nationally accredited alternative energy providers around that provide certificates. They are the experts at generating green power; our specialty is web hosting. By not having to concern ourselves with the actual generation of renewable energy, it allows us focus more on our hosting technology and client care.

By purchasing the green certificates (90% wind/10% solar), the electricity generated by these sources isn't routed directly into our various premises. We still pay all our bills as per usual to our regular providers - but for every X kilowatts worth of green energy tags purchased, X kilowatts less electricity is fed into the grid via non-renewable means. The solar/wind generated electricity we purchased simply goes into the grid, in our case, Portland's. Still, the result is the same - carbon neutral web hosting.

Portland, OR 97202 | thinkhost.com news | WireIE Offers IT Carbon Offsets (September 12, 2008) - Telecommunication solutions provider WireIE Holdings International (wireie.com) has partnered with carbon offset provider Carbonzero (carbonzero.ca) to help Canadian IT firms reduce carbon emissions by monitoring and selling carbon offsets.
According to Friday announcement by WireIE, which provides carbon-reduction education and solutions to the communications industry, will be partnering with Toronto-based Carbonzero to allow corporations to buy carbon offsets to neutralize unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions.
Investment in Carbonzero offsets contribute to projects that reduce carbon emissions, according to the company. These projects either replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources such as wind or solar, or otherwise reduce fossil fuel emissions altogether.
"This alliance allows telecoms to realize a significant financial benefit, while reducing emissions," WireIE President and chief executive officer Robert Barlow. "WireIE's technology will bring a regular stream of offset inventory to Carbonzero to sell, and give telecoms the tools for quantifying, managing, and reducing their greenhouse gases," said Kate Holloway, CEO of Carbonzero.
WireIE, based in a Toronto suburb, is involved in finding energy-efficient solutions for companies to shift away from traditional technologies, but will rely on Carbonzero offsets when no solution is possible.
However, some environmentalists contend that carbon offsets merely allow companies to write a cheque to market itself as "Green," because carbon offsets often lack clear standards or assurance they are reducing carbon. As a third-party, Carbonzero's participation adds some validity to carbon offsets. Carbonzero has also provides energy and pollution management services, and has helped set the industry standards for measuring emissions since 2006.
In April, managed hosting provider Logicworks (logicworks.net) launched its carbon offset program through independent offset retailer TerraPass (terrapass.com).
Companies like ThinkHost (thinkhost.com) have let customers decide if they want the hosting energy they use offset by offering carbon offset purchasing for their premium accounts. These programs have followed the example of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (pge.com) and Dell (dell.com), which have established voluntary carbon offset programs for customers.
JV Media Picks Green Web Hosting (June 19, 2006) - Web hosting and design services provider JV Media Design (jvmediadesign.com) announced on Monday that it is now offering cliental hosting through Web host ThinkHost (thinkhost.com), which uses renewable energy sources to power its servers. It also employs GreenerPrinter (greenprinter.com), which uses soy-based inks and recycled papers.
"The environment is one thing we should all be considerate of - no matter what business you operate", says Sherry Holub, creative director of JV Media Design. "JV Media Design has always been involved, to a lesser degree, with environmental causes and organizations through donations and through the use of recycled business supplied whenever possible. I just felt we could be doing even more."
The firm decided to offer its clients a one-stop place for all their printing needs, and after trying a few printing companies out it eventually chose to go with Greener Printer. The printing option provides those clients who are concerned about environmental issues with piece of mind.
JV Media is also offering any new clients 6 months of free hosting with ThinkHost.
