Ship Damages Sri Lanka Telecom Cable - According to a report by the HindustanTimes.com, an Indian ship, "State of Nagaland," that stopped over at the port of Colombo in Sri Lanka is being held there because the vessel allegedly damaged a cable and severed Sri Lanka's connection to the Internet when it docked. The report said the ship's anchor allegedly damaged the SEA-ME-WE III cable linking Sri Lanka to the Internet backbone. The ship is being held under a court order until the case, which is being filed by the nation's main telecommunications provider Sri Lanka Telecom (slt.lk), is heard on September 6, 2004. Sri Lanka Telecom is seeking 5 million dollars in damages. Internet, data and voice services for Sri Lanka Telecom's 800,000 subscribers have been interrupted since August 22.
