0. Introduction.
Hey, how's it going everybody and welcom - BOO!!! did I scare you?! I'm
sorry about that, I just couldn't resist, it being Hallowiener today and
all. Everybody going to do some trick or meating tonight? Or at least
work on their website? You know, looking back at that "BOO!!" thing, I'm
starting to feel kind of bad about it. I mean, I got pretty freaked out
just writing it, I can't imagine how it must be for you guys actually
reading it! And with no idea it was coming either. Sheesh. My apologies.
But you don't know the _meaning_ of fear until you've looked at the
calendar only to see it's the last day to write a company newsletter and
you have no idea what you're going to do for content. Welcome to the
hell that is my job. Trust me, the 17 minutes I spend writing this thing
each and every month more than make up for the 43,183 I get paid for
doing nothing. Spooky.

1. Mall Cart!
Well, I know one SCARY thing we did this month which warrants mention at
least: we opened our first physical retail location, ever! Well, by
"opened" I mean "are opening tomorrow", and by physical location I mean
cart in a shopping mall! But still, it's a real retail spot, and we
think it may just be the first of its kind in the entire Web Hosting
"Industry"! I put industry in quotes because working 17 minutes a month
can hardly be considered industrious.
What's the deal with this mall cart? Well, it opens tomorrow, November
1st, 2002, at the Paseo Colorado mall in Pasadena, CA! That's right by
Cal Tech, you nerds! What good is a cart for a web host anyways you ask?
WELL, lots of stuff. Really. For example, we've got a dsl connection to
the cart and have set up an open wireless lan (the network name is just
dreamhost) at the cart for anyone in the area to browse the web for
free! Since most people don't bring laptops to the mall with them
(although with Cal Tech near by...) we have four laptops (two macs and
two pcs) on the cart itself which anybody strolling by is free to use.
Also, you can of course sign up for any of our web hosting services
there, and there's always going to be a Happy DreamHost Employee there
to answer any questions customers have about our services! I'm even
going to manning it on Sunday, November 10th, all day (11 AM - 7 PM)
so stop by and say "hey Josh, I love your newsletters, here's a hundred
dollars for making me smile each month"! Don't miss your chance, because
after working those 8 hours I'll have done enough work to last me until
March 2005!

2. Htaccess changes!
Another CHILLING change made this month was to the "Goodies > Htaccess"
area (https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.htaccess) of our web
panel.
We combined the "Iprotect" panel with it, and then reworked the
interface a bit to allow for quicker updating and modifying of lots of
users and passwords. You can also now change the name of the area (the
word that appears in the pop-up username and password dialog). So far,
most of the feedback we've gotten about the change has been uh, shall we
say, hard-hitting. BUT! We've been making little tweaks and updated all
the documentation at https://panel.dreamhost.com/kbase/?area=932 and now
it's not so shabby a panel at all I'd say.
If after reading that you're scared to try out the new interface, well,
that's good! Today IS October 31st after all..

3. Another Intern!
Another FRIGHTENING development here at DreamHost! Remember in last
month's newsletter how I was going on and on about how FREE interns are
the wave of the future? Well, what, did you think that was a joke or
something? Are my newsletters normally funny in any way, shape or form?
Of course not.
So everybody say welcome (I guess just in your head, since I'm not
giving you his email address, phone number, or even last name) to our
new FREE intern, Vijay! An easy name to remember, it's those folks on
MTV. Hi Vijay! Hi Tavis (here's an actual picture of tavis our intern at

4. A Look Ahead!
I'm AFRAID there isn't much more to say in the way of announcements this
month. We did have two other new things we were trying to get done by
the end of this month but it looks like they're just not going to happen
until next week and the week after, respectively.
First off, we are working on releasing a different webmail system
("Endymion") for people to try out as an alternative to squirrelmail.
Squirrelmail has had a hard time scaling and we're trying to find a
workable alternative that will be more reliable for everybody. A LOT of
people use webmail as their primary email interface so we want to make
it as good as possible! Tavis was the main guy working on this, and it's
almost done but not quite. GEEZ, you get what you paid for I guess!
Secondly, we're in the process of upgrading ALL our servers to the new
release of debian, "woody". This'll mean newer versions of a bunch of
the installed programs (like perl for example!) and a bunch of other
little necessary upgrades. It's a big task and something we want to make
sure goes completely smoothly and invisibly to you guys! But hopefully
it'll all be done in about two weeks time and we'll have an announcement
about it and it'll be in the next newsletter, yada yada yada.

the personal site of not one, but TWO people. So it's double as good as
any other home page out there. But really, it is very good.. Kathleen
and Marisa are two friends who've been laid off from their ad agency and
so have a lot of time to work on their web site. It's got lots of good
cartoons, including this one appropriate for today:

and a typical sort of blogging thing going on. The whole site is very
nicely designed and clear to navigate, with cute little drawings and
stuff too!
