0. Introduction.

Good news! The December 2002 DreamHost Newsletter is not pregnant!
Just very, very late.

Heh heee hoo!

In fact, I'm pretty sure in its four years of literarious existance, the
newsletter has never been THIS late before! We were all a bit worried,
really. But honestly, it's my fault the newsletter is so late in its
monthly cycle. You see, I had a pretty weird winter holiday trip. In
fact, I'd say it was arguably the weirdest holiday trip, itinerary-wise,
ever born of woman.

In a period of two weeks I went: U.S. -> Amsterdam -> Kuwait City ->
New Delhi -> Almaty -> New Delhi -> Kuwait City -> Amsterdam -> U.S.

For vacation.

If that doesn't knock back a newsletter-writing schedule, then your
newsletter-writing is obviously more than a one man operation! (YOU try
writing a newsletter on Air Kazakhstan!) I was actually planning on
doing some kind of little contest where you guess what four countries I
visited from December 23rd through December 31st, in a "Mastermind"
kind of a format on the web panel, but then I thought that was too much
work and a little self-indulgent. Better to just write the newsletter
like I always do, and keep the ego-stroking within its well-established
confines.

Well, I better get started with the actual meat of this thing, or it
might not see the light of day before groundhog's day. And THEN it might
see its shadow, jump back in its hole, and then that's another three
weeks of winter for all of us. And it'd be all my fault. Mine and Air
Kazakhstan's.

* Even less downtime.

* An even higher ratio of uptime to downtime.

* Write all newsletters in the same calendar month that they're for.

* If not in the same month, at least in a month that rhymes with it.

* No more jokes, web hosting is serious business.

* No fluffy newsletter filler to try and hide when there aren't any good
announcements.

2. Mailboxes.yourdomain.com!


Of course there's no need for fluff in this month's newsletter.. not
when we've got A super-duper new feature like this to announce! NO WAY!

Starting right now, we've set up at every domain a place where your
end-users can manage all aspects of their own e-mailboxes at your
domain.. without an NDN ID, access to https://panel.dreamhost.com/ or
even knowing their domain is hosted at DreamHost!

Just point them to http://mailboxes.yourdomain.com/ and have them log in
with their email address and password! If you'd like, there's a secure
version at https://mailboxes.yourdomain.com/ too, although a warning
will appear because we didn't get valid certificates for everybody (the
data IS still encrypted though.. just accept the warning!).

From there, your end users are provided the ability to:

* Change their password!

* Check their disk usage!

* Log in to webmail or webmail2!

* Get a handy configuration guide for setting up email clients!

* Change their Inbox rotation preferences!

* Set up and manage server-based email filters!

* Set up and manage an auto-responder!

* Nothing more!

All in a super-easy to use, easy to find, and pretty-looking format! And
all without having to bug you (or us!) about it! Talk about a rocking
feature. And is there another webhost in the known universe with
anything like it? NOT IN MY KNOWN UNIVERSE. If this isn't reason enough
for you to get all your friends to switch over to DreamHost, maybe the

3. Data Center MOVE!


I know you're probably all still stunned (in a positive way) about that
last section, so I'll just make this quick. January 25th (Saturday)
we're moving about half of our customers to a new data center and so
there is a maintenance window from 8pm (PST) to midnight that day during
which everything will be down for them. If you're one of the affected
customers, you'll see more announcements at our web panel leading up to
the move, assuming you go to the web panel during that time.

Um, yeah, nothing to see here, move along to the DHSOTM contest..

"This" month's big fat DreamHost Site of the Month winner is none other
than JOSH! YAY ME! No, just kidding, not Josh Me Josh, Josh Book Josh..

Josh is an Animator! Which is to say, he animates! Which does not mean
he gets romantic with squirrels, you dirty-minded customer! No, instead
it means he's got a really nice website with, wouldn't you know it,
animated gifs! He lives in Burbank, CA, the same place Disney Animation
is, which is probably not a coincidence. And he hosts his site at
DreamHost, the same place that he won this month's award from, which is
also probably not a coincidence.
