0. Introduction.

I'm a little bit upset right now, and they say not to drive when you're
upset. So I guess I'll write January's DreamHost Newsletter instead.
Grrr...

To understand why I'm so upset, it might help if you know a little bit
more about me, Josh. Here's some important background information to
help you out. I was born March 4th, 1977. I have two sisters and a
brother. My top favorite movies of all time are:

1. Shanghai Noon
2. The Great Muppet Caper
3. The Blues Brothers
4. The Jerk
(9 tied for fifth)*

NOW do you see why I'm upset?

I guess it's pretty obvious really. OF COURSE I'm really excited to see
Shanghai Knights, the eagerly anticipated sequel to Shanghai Noon! And
OF COURSE I'm going to see it opening day, first showing, matinee! And
OF COURSE I'm going to stay in the theater and re-see it all the way
through until midnight! And OF COURSE I thought opening day was TODAY.

Well, I hope everybody had a better day than me. Please go see Shanghai
Knights, coming to a theater near you February 7th, 2003.

(And oh yeah, a special note to Jenny in case she's reading this. There
was a SNEAK PREVIEW of Shanghai Knights last Saturday at 7:30pm. Your
birthday dinner was last Saturday at 7:00pm. I really hope you
appreciated my company.)

1. New type of domain redirection!

Not that this is going to cheer me up, but we have a new kinda weird-o
feature this month, brought on by a Happy DreamHost customer request.

You know how you can "fully host" a domain with DreamHost, or you can
"park", "mirror", or "redirect" a domain with DreamHost? Well, now you
can "park", "mirror", "redirect", or "cloak" a domain with DreamHo ...

That's right, you just put in the URL of the remote site you want your
domain to "cloak", and its entire contents will show up on the web page,
but with YOUR DOMAIN staying in the browser window location.

How do we do it? It's pretty lame really. There's just a 100% height
HTML frame that loads the real site in it. You can specify the title you
want to show in the browser window too. Keep in mind this isn't a very
awesome way to do a web-site. Heck, old browsers that can't display
frames won't show the site at all! Also, the URL in the browser never
changes, which might weird some web surfers out. But on the other hand,
isn't that what we're all trying to do with our web-sites anyway?

Nevertheless, it's a good way to set up a new domain temporarily pointing
to like a geocities site or something. And don't go pointing to sites you
don't own and claiming their yours.. you may just open yourself up to a
lawsuit!

And then you might be in court all day on February 7th..

2. Mailboxes.yourdomain.com update!

In case you haven't been reading your newsletters, or you just signed up
this month, or you have a short memory span, I thought I'd just repeat
a new feature I wrote about in the last newsletter (which was only about
two weeks ago..).

Go to http://mailboxes.yourdomain.com/ and find a handy-dandy interface
for your END USERS to manage their own email accounts! You don't have to
give them access to https://panel.dreamhost.com/ nor do YOU have to
manage their email for them! WOooooooooah. sigh. Shanghai Knights is
going to be awesome.

But actually, I thought it'd be good to put this in the newsletter again
because we've ironed out a few bugs from the system (changing your
password there didn't actually work, auto-responders set up there
couldn't be turned off, some people couldn't log into webmail from there)
and so if you were having problems before, please give mailboxes another
chance.

But if you didn't like Owen Wilson in Shanghai Noon the first time, you
don't deserve another chance. Let the REAL FANS get a seat.

3. Iprotect change!

Here's a sneaky little change I thought I would mention in case anyone
read this far. Today we changed the default status for Iprotect on new
domains from on to off.

Iprotect is a little bit of software that we run on all our web servers
that tracks and monitors every time a user logs in or attempts to log in
to an .htaccess-protected direcory. See our web panel at:

for more info!

Don't worry if you were using yours, it's still on! We just noticed it
was causing some confusion for people who didn't know about it having
areas of their site getting blocked mysteriously! Like my attempts
to see S.K. (as us R.F. call it) have been.
