Dream Host newsletter - V6.09 September 2004 - Sep 9, 20040. Introduction. 1. Check Email With user@domain.com - BETA! 2. NEW: Cancel Queued Announcements! 3. Support History: Only Show Human Messages! 4. New Charities! 5. DHSOTM.
######################################################################## 0. Introduction.
"Well, well, well. Look who it finally is, come crawling into my inbox in the middle of the night, thinking I wouldn't notice? What is it, October FIFTH, and you're trying to pawn yourself off as the _September_ newsletter? You'd better have a humdinger of an excuse for this one, Mr. Happy DreamHost Newletter writer un-extraordinaire," say you.
Well, I do! I was going to send this newsletter on Friday, but then I thought "NOBODY reads email on Friday or the weekend! I'll just send it out Monday." And then it was Monday and I was like "I better write that newsletter, I mean SEND that newsletter, which I already WROTE of course." And then I didn't. So that's my excuse. Ha, you don't need an excuse when you're the boss! But of course, I'm not really the boss of YOU, our Happy Customers! So maybe I do need an excuse. My dog barfed on the newsletter.
It won't happen again, I promise. We've put her down.... just kidding!
It was a he.
######################################################################## 1. Check Email With user@domain.com - BETA!
So here I am, picking through the spew-covered remains of what was going to be my super-punctual Friday newsletter, and I can't for the life of me make out what the first section was. Something about everything free forever or something? I'm not sure.. I just can't make it out! It's weird... I like, TOTALLY, can not remember a THING I wrote. Dog puke must have some kind of weird amnestic effect on web hosting newsletterers.
Anyway, I guess I'll just have to come up with something else to try and make up for what was probably the most awesome feature ever. Maybe THIS will do.. you can FINALLY log in to check email with user@domain.com starting today!*
The number one most requested feature of ALL TIME is a reality!**
No amount of dog deja food could cover this up!***
* Note: this is only for shared hosting.. not dedicated. Also, for SENDING mail you still can't use user@domain.com. So it may be kind of annoying for now, unless you already just use your ISP's SMTP servers to send mail. We are working on adding SMTP support for user@domain.com and hope to have it ready by next newsletter (which is very likely, since I just won't write the next newsletter until it's done). The only address you can use to check mail is the "primary" one listed for that mailbox at the "Mail > Addresses" area of our panel. Also, this is BETA! If you have problems loggging in to IMAP or POP with your email address (user@domain.com), please just use the old m######## username instead!
** Not just in web hosting, either. The most requested feature in the whole world for A N Y T H I N G ... EVER!
*** Especially if said dog has just been sent to doggy heaven.
######################################################################## 2. NEW: Cancel Queued Announcements!
Another great thing about delayed newsletters is it buys us some time to throw together a few extra rinky-dink features that people have asked about for a long long time, but we've been too busy drowning in canine chunder to go ahead and whip out. (Hmm, I probably shouldn't say "another great thing" when I haven't said "one good thing", eh?)
So anyway, here's a feature for that category. You know how when you send an email announcement through our system you can specify a time in the future you'd like it to go out? Well, you can. Now you can also CANCEL a future-scheduled announcement from going out, so long as it's scheduled for at least 15 minutes from now! A simple feature, no doubt, but one that will make at least five of you Happy DreamHost Customers even Happier!
To cancel an announcement, just go to the "Mail > Announcements" area..
https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=mail.list
You'll see a list of all announcements you have the capability to cancel. Awoooooooooooooo-oooolph!
######################################################################## 3. Support History: Only Show Human Messages!
Another rinky-dink feature that I seem to recall from somewhere in the puppy projectile is a little addition to the Support History area:
https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=support.his
Now you can have it only show "human messages".. i.e., don't show all the random machine-generated emails we deluge you with and just show actual "human messages". Of course, how confident can you really be that our support staffers are even humans? How confident can you be that I am? How confident can *I* be?
WHOA.
######################################################################## 4. New Charities!
Finally (and by "finally", I mean, there's only the lame DreamHost Site of the Month section after this section), we get to the Charity update!
I already wrote all this on Friday, but I'm sick of digging through this mound of hound hurl just to save myself re-typing this URL:
https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.charity
so I guess I'll just re-type it all.
As you may or may never know, every couple of months DreamHost donates to a couple of worthy causes. How the worthy causes are chosen remains a closely guarded secret, but please do not submit your own charity to us for inclusion.. that's not it! Anyway, we put up the charities, and then YOU (the Happy DreamHost Customers) can donate as MUCH as you'd like, through us, and we MATCH it all!
The last two charities were Debian (debian.org - the linux distribtuion that runs all our servers) and the UN humanitarian effort in Chad-Sudan. Overall we received 29 donations for $576.92 to Chad-Sudan and 24 for $810 to Debian, and matched them! Way to go, Ralphie would be proud!
Now we've switched the charities to the Sierra Club (not actually for fans of Leisure Suit Larry) and the Wikipedia (because inside out, it's wikidy-wikidy-wikidy-wack). PLEASE DONATE! Just not what you ate.
######################################################################## 5. DHSOTM.
This month's prestigious winner of the prestigious DreamHost Site of the Month award is:
http://www.greyflight.com/
Which is a record label it looks like! I'm so glad they have record labels. Without labels you'd spend half the day playing through every record you owned just to find the one you wanted to listen to!
https://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=home.dhsotm
Is where to go if you like seeing your URL in an email sent by somebody not you.
######################################################################## Done picking through the science diet, Josh!
