Dream Host newsletter - V7.05 May 2005 - May 5, 20050. Introduction. 1. PHP 5!!!!!! 2. MySQL 4.1!!!!!!!!! 3. Say goodbye to .md! 4. DHSOTM.
######################################################################## 0. Introduction.
The honeymoon is over. The No-Newsletter-Writing Honeymoon that is! Since my wife did such a HORRIBLE job on last month's newsletter, I've vowed to never let her anywhere near a computer again. And, I've vowed to personally write each and every DreamHost newsletter from now on FOREVER, or until I have something better to do, like go on a honeymoon.
Anyway, I hope everybody enjoyed their memorial day weekend, and had a great official *not actually official* start of summer! Did everybody see The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock? Wasn't that GREAT? Chris Rock isn't just going to be HOSTING the oscars next year, no way!
What about Madagascar with those craaaa-aaaaa-aaazy penguins? HA! I love that! Or maybe if you live in LA or New York, you went and saw "A League of OrdinaryGentlemen".. about those lovable PBA guys! Or maybe "Saving Face", with that crazy Chinese-American lesbian and her traditionalist mother who are reluctant to go public with secret loves their culture frowns upon! How about this heat wave, eh? And what about gas prices?! INSANE!
I have a confession to make. Believe it or not, despite the *seemingly* timeliness of all those statements above, this newsletter was actually written over two weeks ago, on May 16th, 2005! Right now I'm really in Hong Kong, presumably where there is absolutely no Internet! Which is why I had to write this thing so far in advance and just try and predict what kind of late-breaking news would be pertinent in the distant future. Don't worry, this sort of prognosticating becomes second-nature when you've been married as long as I have. In fact, if you don't develop the ability to predict what your spouse is thinking at least two weeks in advance, you better start updating your Yahoo! Personals profile. 'Cause your marriage is deader than Chris Rock's career.
######################################################################## 1. PHP 5!!!!!!
Hey I got an idea.. as long as I'm writing about stuff that doesn't need to be done for another two weeks, I might as well aim high and claim that all our most popular suggestions are getting implemented. GENIUS!
So, believe it or not, we've finally implemented PHP 5! Yeah, for real! In fact, you can turn it on right now for any of your fully hosted domains from the "Domains > Web" area (click "Edit" for your domain). Realize PHP 5 is only available for now as php-cgi though (not as an apache module). But if you've absolutely got to have some cutting-edge PHP 5 feature, that shouldn't matter too much, right!
Go Seattle and Indiana!
######################################################################## 2. MySQL 4.1!!!!!!!!!
What else would make people pretty happy? How about.. MySQL 4.1?! Sweet, that's a full 2.5% more than what we've got now!
So, we've upgraded it, yup, I think. So now you can do sub-selects, prepared statements, it has much better character set support, and all kinds of random other features you probably already know if you cared about us upgrading at all!
And, can you believe the Yankees caught up with the Red Sox so fast? Why, it was not two weeks ago they were 5 games out of first (which was Baltimore back then)!
######################################################################## 3. Say goodbye to .md!
I had a vision that the .md domain was going to be something of a bust back when we were talked into starting to offer it about a year ago. And, now I predict that by the time you read this, we'll no longer be offering new .md registrations. For the six of you who already have a .md through us, don't worry, you'll still be able to renew them and manage them like always.. we're just not going to be registering any more.
Why are we dropping them? Mostly because the newsletter looked like it may have ended up a little thin this month, and so I came up with this as an easy last-second "Feature"! It's always easier to remove features than add them, I say! Not to mention over half our .md registrations so far in 2005 were fraudulent, and when that happens we end up being out $75 from the .md registry! BLECH! Anyway, if next month's newsletter is looking a bit sparse, be prepared to see "Prepare to reunite with .md!"
######################################################################## 4. DHSOTM.
I'd feel a little bad picking the DHSOTM winner really far in advance of the actual newsletter sending, but eh, what can you do?
Oh wait, I know what I can do! I can apologize for my CRAZY wife who last month put the WRONG url for the Winner! How ironic that would be, to spend all month ballot-stuffing the DHSOTM contest, and to finally WIN, only to have the wrong URL posted! Heh hee, hoo... sorry guys!
So anyway, let's just SKIP the DHSOTM this month, and just re-post the correct URL everybody should be visiting to celebrate last month's winner:
http://www.gurusnetwork.com/
And next month I'll choose the top TWO and list them both, and both will get mentioned, which I hope doesn't mean they each get half the traffic, which would mean 1 extra hit each (from me).
######################################################################## Visiting from the past, Josh!
Do you like your DreamHost Web Hosting newsletters a bit more current? If so, you'll probably need to unsubscribe from this one here:

But if you do, you'll miss next month's newsletter which I plan to write two weeks AFTER I send it!
