NTT to Launch Data Center in Vietnam -
March 16, 2009 - Japanese telecom NTT Communications Corporation (www.ntt.com) has announced that Global Data Services JSC (www.jscglobalsolutions.com), its joint venture with Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Group (www.vnpt.com.vn), the largest telecom in Vietnam, will open a Tier 3-equivalent premium data center in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Scheduled to open April 12, according to NTT's Monday announcement, the Thang Long Data Center is designed to satisfy the needs of multinational companies by leveraging VNPT's domestic network and NTT Com's extensive international network, as well as its expertise in designing and operating data centers. The new data center will provide a variety of services, including colocation, email hosting, web hosting and other offerings customized to specific customer needs. Customer support will be provided in English, Japanese and Vietnamese.
The new, Tier 3 data center center fully complies with NTT's high standards for uniform, world-class data-center services, facilities and operations. The standards, which cover a wide range of conditions amounting to some 130 items, are closely aligned with those of globally recognized organizations, including the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) , The Uptime Institute, Inc. (TUI) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE).
The expanding business of multinationals in Vietnam has sharply raised the need for local back-up facilities, such as data centers, to retain business continuity. At the same time, the increasing penetration of the Internet in Vietnam has intensified the demand for data centers as communication platforms for stable Internet business.
The data center has extensive power supply, air conditioning, UPS, and electricity generation and distribution redundancy with no single point of failure. Stable power supply and air conditioning are especially important in Vietnam, where power outages occasionally occur. As well, security measures include a facility access management system, surveillance cameras and rack-key management. Network equipment and servers are fully monitored, and power and air-conditioning systems are checked regularly for maintenance.
Also, according to the announcement, NTT Com's wholly owned subsidiary, Vietnamese Internet, data center and related services provider GDS (gds.com.vn), is preparing to launch a data center in Ho Chi Minh City in Southern Vietnam.
NTT's expansion into the Vietnam market follows other major investments into Asian IT infrastructure, which reports suggest is an expanding market. A month ago, the world's largest undersea cable operator and emerging communications giant, Tata Communications (www.tatacommunications.com) announced a $430 million strategic investment plan in the Asia Pacific region, which included a new $180 million Singapore data center, the completion of the main segment of its TGN-Intra Asia Cable System, and developing the Tata Communications Exchange.
