Switch Media Uses Macquarie to Host Video - March 3, 2009 - The web hosting division of Australian and Asia Pacific telecom Macquarie Telecom, Macquarie Hosting (www.macquarietelecom.com/hosting), has signed a complex business hosting deal with leading Australian digital communications specialist The Switch Media Group, to provide it the fully-managed, high availability hosting solution required to support Switch Media's mission critical video-on-demand and video content management applications, which support customers including Walt Disney, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and a number of Australian political parties.

According to the company's Tuesday announcement, Macquarie's hosted servers act as a digital content vault for Switch Media, allowing the company to both store content and manage peaks in traffic to it while maintaining a secure, low latency download experience for customers. Macquarie enables Switch Media to deliver rich content such as video, webcasts and e-learning applications across multiple digital platforms to customers.

"There is no question that video-on-demand will become ubiquitous as electronics manufacturers, broadcasters and content providers all scramble to develop the means for audiences to access and consume this content as quickly and comfortably as possible," Switch Media managing director Christopher Stenhouse said in a statement. "A significant market opportunity exists for Switch Media to be the provider of choice in this space but only if we can deliver the guaranteed smooth and reliable viewing experience our customer's audiences expect."

Switch Media captures and edits Australia's public broadcaster ABC's content before being uploaded to its video management platform, often just seconds behind its TV broadcast for consumer access via the ABC's iView program.

In November 2008, Macquarie released data on the results of its "Green IT Strategy," which concluded that the company reduced its energy consumption by more than 10 percent across all its data centers over a six-month period, despite a 30 percent increase in managed server customers. The company attributed its success to a combination of energy-efficient servers and networking equipment, storage and solutions designed for managed virtualization, as well as its redesigned data center infrastructure.
