China Tops US In Web Users - July 25, 2008 - According to government data, the growing presence of online Chinese has surpassed the US to become the world's biggest, logging 253-million people online, despite government interference with the web. According to a report by the Associated press on Friday, 19.1 percent of the world's most populous country is connected. The China Internet Network Information Center (cnnic.net.cn) reported that at the end of June, there was a 56 percent increase in use from a year ago, compared to the US, which had about 223 million users in June according to research firm Nielsen Online, a little less than three-quarters of Americans. "This is the first time the number has drastically surpassed the United States, becoming the world's No. 1," a CNNIC statement said. Also in June, internet research organization Stopbadware.org placed China well-ahead of the US in terms of badware share when it identified the top countries and networks responsible for hosting "badware," which includes spyware, malware and deceptive adware. China accounted for 52 percent, while the US took second place with 21 percent and no other country hosted more than 4 percent of badware sites.
