Latest webhosting industry news about Finland Google To Turn Swedish Mill Into Data Center - -- Scandinavian paper and packaging producer Stora Enso (www.storaenso.com) has finalised an agreement with Google (www.google.com), giving the Internet search and online services provider a number of buildings and most of the Summa Mill site in Finland, where it will house a new data center. According to Stora Enso's announcement this week, Google bought the property for approximately 40 million euros (roughly $50.2 million). The deal was originally announced in mid February and is expected to improve Google's operating profit by approximately 38 million euros. Paper production at Summa Mill ended in January 2008. According to a Data Center Knowledge report, Google expects to invest some 200 million Euros, roughly $252 million, into the project, and that the facility should be operational by the end of 2010. ICANN Formalizes Relationship with ccTLD Manager for Finland - ICANN has announced today that it has signed an exchange of letters with the country code top level domain (ccTLD) manager for .fi--Finland, the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority. The Accountability Framework program provides two mechanisms by which ccTLD managers can formalise their relationship with ICANN. The first is an Accountability Framework document that sets out the obligations of a ccTLD manager and ICANN. It also covers dispute resolution and termination and is designed for ccTLD managers requiring a formal document with ICANN. The second mechanism is an exchange of letters between ICANN and the ccTLD manager designed for those for whom a simple statement of commitment is more appropriate. Linux Adopted by Finland's Sonera - Linux, the free computer operating system invented by Finn Linus Torvalds, made its first big splash at home on Thursday when it was embraced by Finland's leading broadband Internet provider Sonera Entrum (sonera.fi). Entrum, which provides high-speed Internet access for 500,000 private and 70,000 corporate subscribers, said it has replaced 60 different Unix and Windows NT servers from different vendors with a single computer containing 500 virtual servers running Linux software installed by Red Hat and SuSE. Linux is free, open-source software, which means that all code is public and can be adapted by companies and individuals. Software engineer Torvalds invented Linux a decade ago and other volunteers have developed it to rival Microsoft's Windows and different Unix platforms from Hewlett-Packard, Compaq and Sun Microsystems.
