president Gail Torreano yesterday proposed a "Michigan
Broadband Summit" to develop industry recommendations
on opening the way for rapid, efficient and effective
deployment of broadband capabilities throughout
Michigan.
In a letter to cable and telecommunications providers
of high-speed Internet access, Torreano said, "As
Governor John Engler highlighted in his 'State of the
State' address, broadband access is critical to the
state's economy. I believe as broadband industry
leaders in Michigan we have a responsibility to
facilitate the deployment of the most robust and
advanced telecommunications, cable, wireless and
satellite broadband infrastructure in America. It is
time for our industry to step forward in support of
the governor's initiative."
Torreano suggested a date of September 27 and
identified several of the most important issues
inhibiting broadband deployment in Michigan, including
the thorny issue of "rights of way." She said
"although there are many issues that separate the
providers of broadband, I believe we can come together
to do what's best for Michigan by developing industry
positions on the following issues that we can
recommend to Governor Engler, the MEDC and to the
Legislature."
The goal of the Michigan Broadband Summit, according
to Torreano, is to develop a set of industry
recommendations to open the way for effective and
efficient deployment of broadband capabilities
throughout Michigan. Providers will also tackle the
tug-of-war between municipalities and providers over
the occupation of right-of-ways.
Torreano invited the Telecommunications Association of
Michigan, Cable Association of Michigan and the
Competitive Local Exchange Carriers Association.
Torreano hopes these organizations will come together
on industry positions and make recommendations to
Governor Engler, the Michigan Economic Development
Corporation and the Legislature. | Reads: 655 | Category: General | Source: TheWHIR : Web Host Industry Reviews URL source: http://www.thewhir.com/marketwatch/ameritech831.cfm
