Sony Pictures Buys Green Hosting at 365 Main Apr 29, 2008
While the last few weeks have brought a deluge of news about new green facilities, features and offerings, the news about green customer relationships has been thinner. On Tuesday, data center operator 365 Main (365main.com) delivered both, reporting that it would make 100 percent renewable energy available for customers of its Chandler, Arizona data center, and that Sony Pictures Entertainment had become the first customer to sign up for the offering.

The renewable power is made available, says 365 Main, by the Salt River Project's (srpnet.com) EarthSise Energy Program, a mouthful that describes the Arizona utility's program to produce clean energy from renewable resources such as the sun, wind, the earth's heat, flowing water and garbage decomposing in landfills.

365 Main's Chandler, Arizona Data center will be providing green power to Sony Pictures

365 Main is among the data center operators leading the green movement in that business. In March the company joined the "Savings by Design" program, an energy efficiency program sponsored in part by the utility company Pacific Gas & Electric.

And later that month the company became the first data center provider in the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program. The company said it will also be working with the EPA to develop an Energy Star performance rating for data centers.

Likewise with the SRP's EarthWise Energy Program, where 365 Main is the first data center provider to participate.

According to the estimates of 365 Main and SRP, the switch to the EarthWise Energy Program by Sony Pictures could help the company reduce the carbon footprint of its deployment at the Arizona data center by up to 19,710 tons over the next three years. The companies say that is the equivalent of removing nearly 3,240 cars from the roads.

"Switching from traditional to clean power is one of the most significant changes that data centers can make to dramatically reduce their carbon footprints," says J.P. Balajadia, senior vice-president of engineering for 365 Main, in the press release. "We are pleased that Sony Pictures is demonstrating its commitment to minimizing its environmental impact by choosing the EarthWise Energy Program for its servers and other IT equipment in our facility."

365 Main says it is also working with utilities in other regions to bring green energy programs similar to EarthWise to its other five data centers.
