The Planet Upgrades Virtual Rack Jul 1, 2008
Dedicated hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com) has added 1Gb-per-second speed and virtual private network services to its virtual private rack solution to help increase flexibility in multi-server environments.

"We introduced virtual racks to provide a cost-effective, automated solution for large and small complex hosting environments," director of product management Urvish Vashi said in a press release. "By adding these upgrades, we're able to better meet the needs of one of our fastest-growing customer segments."

Announced Tuesday, the upgrades will allow customers to transfer data faster between servers both within their virtual rack environment and to other servers on the Internet. As a result, clients can host "higher-scale, more complex environments and offer more bandwidth-intensive services such as streaming media," according to The Planet.

They are charging $10 per month per server for the 1Gb service; however, they are adding VPN services at no additional cost to customers with dedicated firewalls in their virtual rack environment.

Their VPN services give customers remote access to their network as well as greater security, and the option to choose between site-to-site IPSEC VPN or Cisco AnyConnect VPN for individual end-users.

Launched in May, Virtual Racks was designed to open up some of its popular high-end services to a more general population of customers.

Virtual racks, according to The Planet, enhance security, especially for clients running advanced, high-performance applications that require flexibile, multi-server environments -- this includes unlimited server-to-server transfer, transfer of bandwidth between servers to reduce overages on individual servers, and advanced security and hosting technologies.

With these upgrades, customers are now able to use higher-capacity firewalls and load balancers. Hardware add-ons include the Cisco ASA 5520 and Cisco ASA 5550 firewalls, and the Server Iron 4G load balancer.
