Internode to Build $3M Green Facility Jul 8, 2008
Australian Internet service provider Internode (internode.on.net) announced on Tuesday it plans to build a $3 million 'green' data center for the Adelaide CBD after the previous data center it opened last year filled to capacity twice as fast as expected.

Technology executives from Internode are currently researching different environmentally-friendly initiatives elsewhere in Australia and in the US to determine methods in which it can reduce its carbon footprint.

The company has taken its first steps towards green practices, having recently achieved carbon-neutral status after a carbon audit for 2006 to 2007. The company uses solar-powered towers in the Coorong District to deliver wireless broadband services throughout the remote regional area of South Australia.

Additionally, Internode uses virtualization technology at its two major data centers, including its second state-of-the-art data center it launched in April 2007.

"With the new data center, we plan to take those initiatives to a new level," says Internode Group GM Patrick Tapper. "We are examining a range of options, from purchasing 'green power' to innovations such as using winter air to cool the data center. Our people are looking at green data center developments from around Australia and internationally to identify the best-practice approaches."

Once its second facility began approaching full capacity in just over one year ? which the company originally anticipated would take three years - Internode selected a CBD site and started planning for its third dedicated data center.

The second facility is powered by a one-megawatt power feed, spans 3,281 square feet and holds 150 racks of computer equipment. The data center is used for colocation, hosting and disaster recovery services.

Internode's third data center, to open by year-end, will have 160 racks of capacity, in 2,034 square feet of space, fed by 1.3 megawatts of power with redundant generation capacity. Based on current demands for colocation services, Internode anticipates the new facility to be at capacity within 18 months.

In other green data center news, Terremark Worldwide annoucned in June it has nearly completed construction on its new green data center in Culpepper, Virginia. In the same month, IBM opened a 115,000 square-foot facility in Boulder, Colorado in June, which it considers its greenest facility in North America.
