Check Point Issues Fix for MS Patch Jul 11, 2008
Security vendor Check Point Software (checkpoint.com) has issued a fix, via its website, for its ZoneAlarm personal firewall products that revives Internet connections affected by a Microsoft security patch released earlier this week, according to a report on InformationWeek.com.


Downloaded from Check Point's ZoneAlarm.com, the fix applies to the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, Pro, Antivirus, Anti-Spyware and Basic Firewall editions of the product.

On Tuesday, Microsoft sent patch number KB951748 to Windows users, which is designed to resolve a security bug that leaves computers open to DNS attacks.

Discovered by security firm IOActive's (ioactive.com) Dan Kaminsky, the prevalent vulnerability affects not only Microsoft products but also those products made by other networking and software companies.

According to reports, it appears as though ZoneAlarm misread the Microsoft patch as malicious code, and responded to the supposed threat by cutting users' Internet connections.

Affected users may first have to uninstall the Microsoft patch to restore their Internet connections before installing the fix, says CheckPoint.

The security vendor has also advised users to try reconfiguring ZoneAlarm's security settings to "medium" to restore connections even if the Microsoft patch is still in effect.

Microsoft's web browser, Internet Explorer, saw a drive-by malware download last month that exploits an IE feature to launch cross-site scripting attacks.
