MS Executive Joins Juniper as CEO Jul 25, 2008
According to reports on Friday, software giant Microsoft (microsoft.com) announced that Kevin Johnson, the executive in charge of its Windows and Web operations, is leaving the company and stepping into the role of CEO at Juniper Networks (juniper.net).

Johnson, who was a significant player in Microsoft's unsuccessful multi-billion dollar bid to buy Yahoo!, will be replacing current CEO, Scott Kriens, come September. Kriens will continue as chairman and "remain active in the areas of strategy and leadership development," while Johnson will also take a seat on Juniper's board of directors.

Johnson served in a range of strategic executive assignments at Microsoft over the course of his 16-year tenure. Since 2005, Johnson served as president of Microsoft's platforms and services division, which included the Windows operating system and Windows Live programs such as web email and instant messaging. The division also included online advertising, search and Microsoft's MSN sites.

Under his leadership, the division is said to have "achieved record-breaking results with over $20 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2008."

Johnson was also a driving force behind building Microsoft's position as a leader in online advertising and evolving its "software + services" strategy.

"I am delighted to join Juniper," says Johnson. "Juniper is a company with a clear technology agenda, great talent and an amazing growth opportunity in a growing industry. I'm looking forward to bringing my experiences to help Juniper scale and deliver great value to Juniper's customers, partners, employees and shareholders."

Matt Rosoff, an analyst with independent research group Directions on Microsoft, told the Associated Press in an interview on Thursday that although no one can say for sure, it's quite likely that Johnson's exit is "based on recent events probably related to Yahoo! and the online segment's last-quarter performance." The fact that a Yahoo deal has still not come to fruition is probably one reason why he's leaving, voluntarily or not, says Rosoff.

Microsoft says the platforms and services division will now be split in two, with heads of the groups reporting directly to Ballmer.

The newly formed Windows/Windows Live division will be led by senior vice presidents Steven Sinofsky, Jon DeVaan and Bill Veghte.

Microsoft is still searching for a new leader for its online services business, but in the interim it will be led by senior vice presidents Satya Nadella and Brian McAndrews, says the software giant.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that construction for its new container data center in Northlake, a Chicago suburb, is set to tentatively be completed in the first half of October.
