APC Fuel Cells Power Data Centers Aug 20, 2008
Power and cooling services provider APC (apc.com), a subsidiary of Schneider Electric, (schneider-electric.com) has announced its hydrogen-based Fuel Cell Extended Run, or FCXR, product will supply the company's InfraStruXure, containerized data center architecture with highly efficient, environmentally friendly backup power.

According to APC's announcement Tuesday, FCXR was developed in collaboration with Hydrogenics Corporation (hydrogenics.com) for InfraStruXure, which "fully integrates power, cooling, environmental monitoring and management in a rack-optimized design." FCXR will be available in select regions beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008.

APC promises lower operating costs, more reliability and expanded runtime capabilities with lessening maintenance, environmental impact and space demands, making large, polluting, noisy diesel generators obsolete.

APC data center solutions, software and services senior vice president John DiPippo said FCXR is one of the first commercial uses of fuel cell technology for data center environments. "The next generation FCXR incorporates key improvements based on the successful commercial trials of our earlier fuel cell solution deployed during the past two years," DiPippo said in a statement. "We believe APC's new fuel cell product provides the right combination of power capacity and innovative hydrogen-based technology to meet market demand."

FCXR produces emission-free power using air and stored hydrogen. The only by-products during the electrical conversion of hydrogen and oxygen are heat and water. It is available in 10, 20 and 30 kW versions, all fitting in a single 19-inch rack.

Fuel cells are particularly crucial for containerized data centers including modular and mobile configurations, a marketplace APC shares with pioneers Sun Microsystems (sun.com) and Rackable (rackable.com), and relatively new entries Dell (dell.com) and Microsoft (microsoft.com).
