Announced Monday, Sun's new mid-range server promises lower operating costs despite a hefty upfront cost of $44,995. According to a Sun white paper, the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors used in the T5440 are the industry's first massively threaded systems on a chip (or SoC), offering breakthrough performance and energy efficiency.
Sun said the T5440 is the first quad-socket system to support Sun's CoolThreads chip multithreading technology, supporting up to 256 threads in only four rack units, providing massive computational density while staying within constrained envelopes of power and cooling. It uses 26 percent less power than IBM's Power 560 server partly due to an intelligent fan control system that cools specific components rather than the system as a whole.
According to reports from GreenTechMedia, the SPARC Enterprise T5440 server is a joint project from Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu that will "be sold by both companies but it still more identified with Sun." They also reported that variable speed fans are a quick favorite of data center managers citing an Oracle test from earlier in the year that found variable speed fans pay for themselves after about nine months in a data center environment. | Reads: 1002 | Category: General | Source: TheWHIR : Web Host Industry Reviews URL source: http://www.thewhir.com/marketwatch/101408_Sun_Adds_New_Server_Cooling_Tech.cfm
