The Newsweek article described the situation when Belarus-born Washington DC lawyer Yaraslau Kryvoi got a notice in February from his web hosting firm that the blog he administers for his local Belarussian American Association chapter would be suspended and that he had 10 days to remove his content. This was, in effect, because BlueHost mistakenly throught that Kryvoi was a citizen of a country on the US government's list of rogue states.
Many large web hosts including HostMonster, Blaser Hosting and Biz Builder Hosting explicitly prohibit countries based on the perceived risk of dealing with them. Newsweek rightly implies that this is a form of profiling, however, from a web hosting perspective, eliminating large, troublesome areas helps companies more efficiently police customer websites.
According to its Terms of Service, BlueHost sanctions countries based on the government's economic and trade sanctions. BlueHost states that the US government, through "various of its offices and agencies, ...has determined that, with respect to all or certain commercial activities that would otherwise occur between i) the US, its citizens or residents on the one hand and ii) the governments, citizens, or residents of certain other countries ("Sanctioned Countries") on the other hand, said commercial activities are to be prohibited, embargoed, sanctioned, banned, and/or otherwise excluded."
The countries BlueHosts presently sanctions include Belarus, Burma, Cote d'Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iran, Iraq, former Liberian Regime of Charles Taylor, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Zimbabwe, and countries belonging to "the Balkans."
While ideally, web hosts should be able to account for everything they host, much like newspaper publisher has a responsibility for what is published in their paper, however, as online crime continues to be profitable, criminals will continue to find hosts for their frauds and scams.
For some hosts, imposing rigid rules on international users may be a necessity so that these hosts can keep tabs on their US-approved clients, which can be equally threatening.
The dangers of laissez-faire web hosting were revealed when web hosting provider McColo (www.mccolo.com), which allegedly hosted some of the Internet's most malicious online scams, went offline in November 2008, reducing the global amount of spam by three quarters according to some estimates.
Again, while Newsweek brings up the point that US hosting companies blacklisting certain rogue states is just as anti-democratic as these purportedly authoritarian states, there are plenty of reputable hosts that will host sites from around the world - though perhaps not for just $6.95 per month.

Suddenly my admin panel will not be working. For the first round, i re-uploaded my admin panel and did not contact bluehost. But after sometime not even logging into my ftp account, the missing file problem arise again. This time i contacted bluehost. I understood from some articles that their server was hacked recently and when i mentioned that in my email, they told me its not their fault but its my files that is not secured. I told them i'm just a layman user, i just upload my files to their server and just hope my web site works. What is this about securing my files? They did not say more on how they can help me and from their emails i could tell they do not wish to help. I told them if this is the case I would like to move my files to another hosting and they gladly ask me to go ahead with the migration to another hosting. I am not sure if they even moved an inch to show that they like to help, instead pushes the problem to their subscribers. We are just users that upload our web site to their server and hope it runs, I think its minimum for hosting companies to ensure that no unauthorized users gets to the files on their server. I hope the people who wish to apply for bluehost be aware of what they will do to their customers and will not end up like me. Now they tell me they do not backup my files and i am going to sort out the problems with the site myself. At the same time i am sourcing for a new hosting. I am running an ecommerce site, so because of all these I had to halt my online business. I really hope the users out there get to know about this.

BlueHost provides security for all servers. However it is up to the end user to ensure that any 3rd party applications, scripts etc. are kept up to date to prevent your site from being hacked. We provide SimpleScripts for free to all our customers which will alert you when a new version or security update is made available but it falls on the customer to actually update it. Their tech support don't know how to put a Joomla website online although their sales people tell you that they have scripts which can be used to host Joomla website. So beware they will lie to you that they can host a Joomla website but they are lying to you. l spent 6 hours of my time trying to host a Joomla web site with them and all they tried to do was to lie to me and and try and wanting to eventually take my paid subscription, but l was too smart for that l caught up with them right away before 3 days was over to lose my paid subscription.

The reason given was incorrect contact info. I called their support line, and was told that I would have to snailmail my ID and also give them my password in order to activate my account - i.e. there was no problem with the contact information with my account.
I don't see any reason why I should have to give my password to them to activate my account, so I canceled it.
Stay away from Bluehost.

I haven't had any big problems, I find them helpful on customer service, and uptime is as quoted or better. Their server setup is very flexible for php, allowing me to set individual php.ini files. I wouldn't have known that cPanel had been limited, because it has lots of useful functionality. It's great value for money, and I'm a happy customer.

Running OSS gallery.sourceforge.net on BlueHost is VEXATIOUS at best
OSS Gallery on BlueHost is last-millennium slow -- even with small family galleries.
BlueHost seems to OVERSELL shared servers.
BlueHost response is laggy even to Internet2 wired machines. uh oh.
BlueHost is unfamiliar with mod_security
BlueHost is cheap AND inexpensive... but a waste of your time and money. I will be urging my friend to start the painful migration to another host.. perhaps DreamHost.. but I would prefer another cPanel based webhost -- though one that is not crippled like BlueHost. So that puts HostGator out of the picture, too.
BlueHost is definately more capable, competant, and responsive than GodAddY, but then almost anything is (cite: nodaddy.com)

The Bluehost "Abuse" department is run much like a totalitarian state. "there is no appeal" , "you must..or...", "we will terminate" ...
Most recently, UNLIMITED disk space? Ha. What they don't tell you is that you are limited to 50k files. Figure that one out and you'll see that unlimited does not mean unlimited. They then state (see other's comments below) that you can have files of any size but not more than 50k. But, surprise! If you take more disk space than they "allow" then they cut you off at the knees and you must purchase another account. OK, that's ok. But why not be upfront? Why don't the comments from BlueHost below have names?
All this adds up to frustration because Bluehost is basically arbitrary and can do what ever an employee wants because it "violates TOS".

Bluehost limits the number of files in an account to 50,000. The size of the files is unlimited. Can you trust a host like this with your domain? If you happen to be on a shared server that also hosts one (or more) of these scammer sites, and the scammer gets blocked - so do you! This means that your site is offline until the spammer / scammer is removed.

May 7, 2009 Heather ( verdraengen[at]gmail[dot]com ) | Experienced massive dataloss on work that took me weeks to complete. Bluehost representatives (grunts as well as supervisors) treated me like absolute garbage after losing weeks of my hard work. I simply asked for them to submit something to me in writing, or to somehow give me some proof of a hardware failure that I could present to my superiors to explain why my work had suddenly gone missing. I was spoken to informally, disrespectfully, and was told that it was my fault for hosting my data on "a volatile shared server" when referring to their own service.
After submitting a letter to them about the poor treatment I received (after actually being very nice to them), my account was suspended.
This was over two months ago, and my account is still suspended for no apparent reason.
I urge everyone to reconsider their hosting plans with Bluehost. I've referred about 10 people to Bluehost and regret ever doing so. NEVER PURCHASE WEBSPACE WITH THESE PEOPLE!

I was with them just over 1 year. I had 5 personal/family domains (photos and blogs) and one not-for-profit domain. Minimal bandwidth on all of them, but considerable amounts of disk space due mostly to 4 Gallery2 installs. But, that's ok, they say unlimited storage right! Wrong! My account was disabled due to some misunderstanding. Fair enough, but in the process of diagnosing the cause for the disable, I was informed that they were days away from imposing a 50k file number limit. WHAT!! I'm over 200k easy, again due to a large photo collection. Now, I'm freaking out, and scrambling to find someone who will not lock my account for having lots of photos. Thanks for the heads up BH! Unlimited My Ass! They hide behind their TOS saying that anybody who causes stress on a server is subject to their account being disabled. I was in violation because their filesystem checks were taking too long. What? Why is it my fault that you have too many users on one machine? My CPU,Memory and Bandwidth are almost nill, yet my file # exceeds your ability to contend with? We're not talking about millions of files here, but 200,000.
Thanks for the fiasco BH, and the waste of my time.

April 24, 2009 Don Freeman ( don_freeman at comcast dot net ) | I would not recommend bluehost. Our forum on our website, which sees little to no use, got hacked by a spammer. This was a free program provided by bluehost to it's customers, PHP BB3. I was told after our forums got hacked by spambots, that I would have to find another webhost, no if's and's or but's about it. I removed the forums from our site, and they still refused to allow me to have my website hosted there. This is / was a simple website for a group of guys that play a golf game online versus one another. Nothing space consuming, high usage or anything of that sorts. Anyhow, I wouldn't recommend a website from these people if they were the last host available.

It is the users responsibility to keep scripts and open source programs up to date. The site owner did not perform a number of critical security updates to the phpBB installation on the account and the account was compromised. The user was unable to fix the issues on the site in a timely manner and the account was refunded for the remainder of the hosting term paid for. -- bluehost.com representative | Time Hosted: 3 to 6 months

April 8, 2009 Jason ( noemail(at)noemail(dot)com ) | Terrible. Shared web hosting was slow with frequent downtime. Canceling your account is a cat and mouse game and nearly impossible to find the correct link. After canceling my account, it took 5 months for them to stop try to charge my bank for hosting that I canceled awhile ago. I had to display the e-mail that I sent and the correspondence with a sales/support rep that had told me it was canceled. After threatening BBB contact if they did not cease and desist, they quit their e-mails and charges.
Be weary of these cheap hosts for they are just that.

While we allow an unlimited number of domains on one account there are limitations to the amount of resources a single user account has access to. February 17, 2009 Rob McDonell ( arkangles at arkangles dot com ) | I've used BlueHost for years, and generally been satisfied until recently. Several times now they've deactivated my account without warning because of CPU usage by my database. The trouble is they give absolutely no warning and no second chance , they just shut you down completely. You can't even FTP in to see what happened or look at the logs or anything. Most unsatisfactory.

The customers MYSQL queries were not optimized or using caching and were constantly causing performance issues on the server. The site was suspended until such database queries were fixed and then re-enabled.
