About DreamHostEmployee Owned
You may have noticed that we do things a little differently around here. There's a reason for that. We're Special. Hooray!
DreamHost is owned by its employees. We're a tight-knit family and we're not looking to sell out to investors or media conglomerates or other gigantic companies who care more about the bottom line than providing solid web hosting.
Believe us, there's plenty of those in the hosting industry already and you probably don't want to get mixed up with them.
The guys who work at those companies are crazy. They earn sales commissions. They dress in 'business casual' attire. Some of them might even wear suits! They'll toss around fancy words like 'monetizing' and 'ROI'. They attend hosting 'conferences'.
They wear cologne.
Wearing cologne in the DreamHost office is grounds for a firing. Or at least a solid 8 hours of harassment. The Bottom Line
We love it here and we're all focused on hosting. It's what we do. It's what we're good at.
And we're not faceless robots. Why not meet the team? Send us an email when you're done... Maybe you'll even want to sign up for hosting once you've had a chance to check us out!
We're looking forward to welcoming you to our family!
Our Past We at DreamHost have been happily hosting our clients' dreams (and websites) since April 1997 - close to a century ago in Internet years! That was when we (four Computer Science undergraduates at hmc.edu in Claremont, CA) launched this company with no capital apart from a single Pentium 100 web server (Destro was her name), using shared bandwidth on a T1 line that a friend gave us at no cost.
By necessity we had to be frugal, but even with our less than ample resources we always did our best to provide a quality service at a reasonable price. Those early days quickly taught us the technical expertise and market savvy necessary to survive in our industry, as well as teaching us to respect each and every customer's wishes, dealing with them as though they were our friends. Hey, most of them were!
It's hard to believe that we've already grown to over 1500 servers (each with over 50 times the processing power of Destro), a state-of-the-art data center, and a full time staff of 70 at last count. Even though we now grow more in a day than we did in our first three months of business, we've always made it our number one priority to deal with every client as a human being and as a friend. We like to think that that, more than anything else, is the real reason for our current success.
Now hosting over 800,000 web sites, we've definitely come a long way since 1997. But we can see there's still a long road in front of us. We don't know exactly where it will lead; all we know is that the trip will be fun, and we wish you'd come with us!
The Present As with all companies, there are some things we do the same as our competitors and there are some things we do differently. We try and imitate whenever we feel imitation is deserved, and we deviate whenever we feel deviation is a must. Most hosts offer a wide range of features bundled with various service plans, and we are of course no exception. Canned CGI scripts, full CGI access, PHP5, SSH and Telnet, raw log files plus analyzed access statistics, unlimited email forwarding, aliasing, auto-responding, vanity domain names, MySQL, e-commerce, plenty of disk space and transfer allowance are available for as little as $5.95/month.
Most hosts offer a web-based control panel to manage your account and its features, and we do too. From there you can control all aspects of your account(s), including any billing-related and customer support concerns you may have. But wait. There is more...
Where you first start to notice the difference between DreamHost and all other webhosts is the community feel of our web panel. Besides the standard links for things like email and domain management, there are areas for customer suggestions, DreamHost newsletters, the DreamHost Site of the Month, DreamHost donations, the unofficial DreamHost directory, the DreamHost Rewards program, as well as a customer discussion area. All of these are a natural outcropping of our desire to stay in touch with our clients and to foster a free flow of ideas between them and us. What better way to learn how to keep our customers happy than to ask them, and then to act on what they say?
Another refreshing difference is how relaxed and customer-oriented our billing practices are. There is an unconditional 97 day money back guarantee on all accounts, including any setup fees, and we have no hidden costs and no minimum monthly contracts on any of our plans! We accept payment via Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Diner's Club, and Carte Blanche, personal check or money order, and we even accept Google Checkout and PayPal. We can provide an online PDF invoice if required by your Accounts Payable department. The differences keep coming!
Our choice to not provide Microsoft operating systems for any of our hosting products is one that is a common subject of inquiry. We feel strongly that the best products available for the job of serving Internet content are those based on UNIX TM, and that the efforts of the open source community specifically (Linux, Apache, MySQL and so on) are best of breed. To use any Windows or related products would be to us a vote of no confidence against the very technology that made it possible for us to compete in this industry in the first place! It turns out that once our customers give open source alternatives a chance they are overjoyed with the performance and feature set available to them. Of course, some will decide to go with someone else, and we respect their decision. Our only request is that if in the future the need ever does arise for a Unix-based solution they'll give us another shot!
But of course, the biggest difference, the one that keeps people singing our praises and referring their friends, is our customer service. Every message is responded to with a friendly, helpful, and completely honest answer. Sometimes a server does go down, and we let our customers know when it happens. We'll also let them know if they're spending more money than they need, or what sort of software we personally use for whatever they're trying to implement. We constantly try to treat everyone as a friend in need (indeed!).
Maybe you're wondering just how stable we are? We've been a privately held company and since 1997 when we first started hosting our customers' dreams, so that should give you some indication that we're serious about what we do! We're currently connected to the Internet via redundant gigabit connections with multiple carriers to ensure continued network connectivity in case any carrier goes down. Each connection is carried across a diversified fiber network and connects to different entrances to the Internet's backbone. This allows for total network redundancy. We also keep our bandwidth ~unsaturated~. We carry enough network capacity to double our load if we need to. We've been doing this hosting thing since 1997, and in that time we've learned what it takes to provide rock-solid service and connectivity.
The Future
We're focused squarely on providing quality customer service and the absolute best web hosting packages in the industry. It's a never-ending quest, but it's one we're happy to take on.
We pledge to always take your business seriously. We're always looking for ways to diversify our offerings, improve reliability, and improve our overall quality of service - all while keeping prices low!
We're glad that you've chosen to check us out today and we hope that you'll give us the opportunity to host your dreams someday soon.
We're Green Carbon Neutral. That's us.
DreamHost is carbon neutral.
We've calculated the impact of everything that DreamHost uses and leaves behind in the course of our daily work. All of the resources that we use - paper in the office, electricity for our servers, even the gas in our cars that bring us to the office - leaves behind some kind of soul-sucking residue in the world. We're green
When we learned that running DreamHost generated as much carbon dioxide as 545 average-size homes we realized we had to do something to neutralize our emissions.
With a bit of research we found the most effective approach begins with resource conservation: turning off the lights, reducing travel, printing on both sides of the page. Efforts are being ramped up here daily to do what we do with less. The next step is to use clean, renewable energy. Without the option to put up solar panels or connect with a green power utility for us this means purchasing Renewable Energy Credits. Finally, to neutralize those unavoidable emissions we’ve invested in Emission Reduction Credits (a.k.a. “offsets”) which guarantee our remaining impact is effectively erased.

| | "my domain is hosted with dreamhost, they are very transparent when server is down etc, and they are it up most of the time even before i know there was a downtime!" Steven<backspace.me@gmail.com> / http://www.threesixzero.net/ | | DreamHost Offers Free Apps Hosting Service - January 9, 2009 - Web hosting provider DreamHost (www.dreamhost.com) announced on its blog Friday it has launched a new hosting service for web-based applications (www.dreamhostapps.com), available now for free in its beta release.
"Well, it's free for now anyway. We're flirting with the idea of a $50 yearly fee once it's out of beta…but if you sign up RIGHT NOW to help us test things out we'll let you use DreamHost Apps for free for ever!"
Current DreamHost customers can already log into the DreamHost Apps service with the same DreamHost Web Panel login.
The exact same functionality has been available to customers for months under the "Easy Mode" in the "Goodies / One-Click Installs" section of the account control panel.
Meanwhile, other individuals looking for free hosting of a WordPress Blog, Drupal Site, Zenphoto Gallery, Mediawiki Wiki, PhpBB Forum, Google Apps and Gmail can gain access to the service by invitation only.
DreamHost has posted about 100 invitation codes in the comments section of the blog post, explaining that if the code fails to work it has already been redeemed. It also adds that it may post more invitation codes in the coming days.
Users of the free DreamHost Apps service will not have access to FTP access, SSH access, email, or technical support. DreamHost Apps users can install and delete apps through the DreamHost Apps management interface, while using each Apps' own web-based interface to make application-level changes.
DreamHost says the service was developed "over the course of a few months by a small team of four hardworking DreamHost Employees, Pete V, Mike P, Joshua H, and me, Brett D."
In other applications hosting services news, Google announced last month that Salesforce.com's Force.com has now been integrated into Google's App Engine.

May 31, 2010 V. Bruck ( zanthea at web dot de ) | Aren't they special. They were okay as long as we had hard coded HTML pages but installing seminal content management systems we rapidly detemined their limits. Sorry to say we didn't get much help, and only got required information from other users in the forum.
Pricing is okay if you don't expect much in return. Didn't experience any downtimes. Control panel was quite okay. Instead of FAQ or knowledge base we found wikis, descriptions there often were of little help. We didn't really get any (quick) support aside from the user forum.
No recommendation from us. We moved with 6 websites.

March 9, 2010 Terenze ( terenzeyuen[at]gmail[dot]com ) | Very bad technical support. If you are someone non-technical, NEVER buy into this server.
I am a full time web developer myself and trying to ask for help to alter some settings in php.ini file. I've followed every step in their WIKI documentation, which seems to be very helpful and they are knowing what to do.
But my site gone down, so i submitted a support ticket as a matter of urgency and this is what i've got back: I'm terribly sorry but we do not provide technical assistance for custom PHP.ini installations.
What you can do is request for assistance from our fellow Dreamhost customers, who has gotten this to work. Our forum is located here:

The only answer i've got was a 'sorry feeling' and asking me to post into a forum, let the site break and wait for an answer?
Very bad technical support.
To be honest, i develop a lot of website on different servers, never met any as bad as this one.
Rating: -100000
NEVER buy into it at all.
Hope this help some non-technical customers when making a decision!

August 30, 2009 js ( ichsie(at)gmail(dot)com ) | DreamHost would have been the best of cheap webhosting if their servers do not crash and go down so frequently. It's absolutely a nightmare. Their control panel is great, support not bad too, but what do these matter if the server is down for 1/5 of the time?! We need uptime! That's essentially what makes a great web host! But on the contrary, DreamHost is way beyond a bad host in uptime.
Absolutely NOT recommended, even with a small budget you can find better uptime services elsewhere.

July 4, 2009 Paolo, askdivine.com ( paolo dot vizzini at gmail dot com ) | A word advice: Keep Away From Dreamhost! The only way to describe Dreamhost's tech support team is that they are incompetent. The company should be renamed as NightmareHost!
Dreamhost is the worst hosting company I have ever dealt with. I'm responsible for number of websites and by mistake I choose Dreamhost for the newest client (askdivine.com)!
They have disabled my website which is only two weeks old, and it is offline for well over 24hrs because of a security threat!
Apparently a phishing page was uploaded to the account. After removing the threat they also have disabled the website, which was absolutely unnecessary!
Their excuse was that the old versions of WordPress, PHPBB, etc. are the common causes for this sort of thing, the irony is that I have never used any of them!
Anyway, I went through the files and told them everything is OK and 10 hrs later came up with a new excuse that our web software itself is the threat and we need to update Joomla. According to them Joomla 1.5.11 has potential vulnerabilities.
Cut the story short, I have upgraded to Joomla! 1.5.12. and the website is still down! I have submitted a new ticket support over 7 hrs ago and no response yet!

July 4, 2009 Paolo ( paolo dot vizzini at gmail dot com ) | I consider Draemhost as one of the worst web hosting companies.
The price wise and the control panel is are ok, but the tech support sucks! The usual response time is between 10 to 12 hrs – and still they have no clues about anything!
I think the company runs by a bunch of school kids since when a problem rises they are running around confused like a headless chickens! I have heard excuses for their incompetency beyond comprehension!
It should be renamed as NightmareHost!

December 1, 2008 Nyetah ( rhythmso(at)excite(dot)com ) | DreamHost is a simple to use, feature rich, and good, basic web hosting company. I am an old Pair.com customer (Pair is probably the best and most secure host around but definitely not cheap and better for more advanced users and needs). Dreamhost on the other hand will give you everything you need and more with a simple price point and usability.
As per some of the "crazy" comments here about them being white supremacists and other bizarre accusations? Believe it if you will but think of the great Onion news story, "Local idiot to post comment on Internet".

Did you ever want to use a hosting company and have it just, work? That's not Dream Host. Dream Host is known as Dream Disgrace. Possibly the worst hosting company on the face of this earth.

August 25, 2008 New American Communications ( evpulse at gmail dot com ) | Ugh. I was ok with them until I found out that the whole thing is a White Supremacist owned business. It took me a while to figure it out but I did some research and found this:

If you research this site you will see their affiliation with New Dream Network. New Dream is even collecting money for The Civic Platform here: http://www.dreamhost.com/donate.cgi?id=8987
If you are ok with supporting neo-nazi's / white supremacists then you've picked the right webhost.

May 3, 2008 Paul Rosenberg ( pixeltech at mac dot com ) | Where do I start with these people? This was a good deal, until they started having problems with servers going down for days at a time, and NO customer service except by email or wiki. I've been exercising patience with them, until the charged me over $1000 out of nowhere. Then, they suspended my hosting. I've come to despise this company. After four years, I've given them all the second chances they deserve and then some. I am done with dreamhost, and I strongly encourage anyone to think twice before using them!

April 9, 2008 Jamie ( avonturier1111 at hotmail dot com ) | These people should be called NIGHTMARE host. They have nobody you can call when there is a problem and I find it to be a HUGE problem when they start charging me for things they shouldn't charge me for. They made several erroneous charges and they fixed two of them, but they are refusing to fix a $190 problem and have my (2) domains held hostage unless I pay them $260! What!!!??? And again... nobody to talk to.
It's a good thing these are the ones I'm building, not the ones I rely heavily on every day. I was dangerously close to that I couldn't imagine if that were the case. They are not worth the risk. There are several others that have phone number and professional customer services that will help you. These guys only have email and though they reply, they don't actually answer any of your questions and concerns. It's totally frustrating.
My review ABSOLUTELY NEGATIVE!!! STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

March 27, 2008 Jerry ( gskidmor_dontincludeunderscores(at)hotmail(dot)com ) | I'm using the middle of the line package (one above the base). They are extremely slow to respond to server problem and the server response times are just dreadful. My site has been up and down for the past 3 weeks. But even prior to this their service was sporadic at best. They overload their serves to the point they become unstable; on-top of which, they don't have the technical expertise needed to run in an environment like that. What's worse, is they refuse to move your site to a less loaded server, so it languishes for weeks.
Unless you have a site you don't much care for, I can't recommend this place.

March 24, 2008 Marc ( marc(at)myrubberducky(dot)com ) | I set up a basic plan for a small local political campaign and things ran a little slowly but basically it was fine. Inside of three weeks things started rolling downhill and it all got real ugly. Here's my take, great price, great feature set. If you get stuck on a troublesome fileserver or cluster BAIL! They have proven to be incapable of handling server problems and will let your site suffer for weeks and weeks before taking action. And once they do take action, be prepared for some serious business-day downtime. Once you start seeing that sort of stuff on your server you better move, and fast.

October 3, 2007 Calimus ( calimus at techography dot com ) | I have the Monster Code plan. You can't beat the diskspace and bandwidth for the price. DH has had growing pains, but what host doesn't? They have always been very quick with their fixes and keep a blog about what is going on even if it's not flattering for them.
I've never been ignored if I've had to contact customer service or support. Sometimes my sites are a tad slow, but thats shared hosting for you. If I wanted blazing fast sites, I'd loosen up the wallet and pay for dedicated hosting. DH's shared hosting is plenty fast enough. Very happy customer here. Features are great, one click installs of well known web-apps like phpbb/joomla. Custom control panel makes it very easy to administer your sites.
With over 10 years of being on the net, this is by far the best host I've ever had.

July 12, 2007 turin ( -no email- ) | Plan - My Crazy Domain Insane - Which is the cheapest plan, but more than enough for my few sites. Has all the bells and whistles. Plus free CVS or Subversion server. A nice feature is the weekly increase in bandwidth and storage space( amount dependent on which plan you choose ) mine grows at 16GB bandwidth a week and disk space grows 1024GB a week. Have been very happy with Dreamhost for almost 3years.
