I have been robbed. Their website STATES: https://www.greengeeks.com/web-hosting/green-web-hosting.php "Monthly Price $4.95/month Includes Free Domain & Setup" I have since been charge $148 for the full three years! A guy called and rushed through his script and never once confirmed the price. Now my rent check will bounce, my kids will go hungry and my lights turned off. Homeless = no internet = no income = no website = no life. They have refused my phone calls, my emails and hung up on me numerous times. Warn people away from them. They are horrendous.

I signed up and the rep said that I would get my account details in 10 to 15 minutes, I didn't get the login information in that time so I called their support people. I was surprised that I got someone within only a few seconds, and this was on a Sunday!!! The agent told me check my spam folder, which I did and it was not there. They resent the login information and I got it within a few seconds at the time. The rep didn't want to let me go until I was sure I had the information I needed. Now that's what I call customer service! It's refreshing! Very homely feeling too! Price isn't bad at all and obviously the service that I get for the price is worth every cent! Go with these guys!

Just because i want to do something for environment, i started to sign up for greengeeks. The feature is good,unlimited space and bandwidth, but the customer service is just lack of knowledge and seems not to understand about hosting. Only level 3 support is the good cust service but it's not easy to contact them. Multiple times i alerted their team that the server load is more than 2 or 3, but they seems to say there is nothing wrong and yet my clients web started to slow down.

Overall, choose other hosting companies that provide knowledgeable cust service.

This is Trey Gardner CEO of Green Geeks.

I have been going over the 30 separate trouble tickets that Benny submitted to our staff within the 2 1/2 month period he was a customer of ours. I have found no instance of any type that our staff did not fully and accurately answer Benny's multiple questions which included whether the pictures on our web site were our servers or pictures provided by our co-location facility SingleHop. In fact those pictures are of some of the servers in the Singlehop facility (incase you like Benny were curious about that aspect of our business).

I have gone over the tickets from Benny to our admins that the server loads were high and I have checked our records during those times on the server Benny was on RS9 and I have found no instances nor have our admins of the delays he referred to. In addition checking the trouble tickets during the times he referenced and cross referencing them with anyone complaining about RS9 at that time we could find no other instances of communication.

Benny's address is listed in Singapore and we host several thousands of clients in Asia, Australia etc, some of whom are on the server RS9 and we have not seen similar complaints.

I've moved to GreenGeeks.com for two reasons: I wanted my website to do a little something for environment, may it be only symbolic. I mainly come to GreenGeeks because of very disappointing experiences in the past with my former webhosting companies. Experiences which had not prepared me for such an excellent customer service like the one GreenGeeks.com can be proud of.
If my websites happen to be offline on rare occasions, it is never for more than 10 minutes and EACH time I contact support I have a reply in the minute.
Like we use to read it on dvds ... "Two thumbs up !!" \o/

Currently, I've been with GreenGeeks for about a month now, more or less.
Right now, I have no problems with downtimes, lag, or anything like that.

If I had to compare HostGator with GreenGeeks, I would pick GreenGeeks all the way, even though HostGator does provide good service, it just seems to be overpriced.
GreenGeeks provides unlimited space and bandwidth, but only limits you on how many accounts you can create. This feature I just love!

The price for the reseller is just amazing, well, just because it doesn't limit you on how much space and bandwidth you can use.
Their customer support isn't the best, but it still helps you out!

I have not experienced any downtimes ever since I've been with them!

Watch out for these guys. Don't be fooled by their responses to complaints on this review site. also watch out for review sites that earn their money promoting a few "top" web sites.
Despite Greengeeks creamy response to my previous complaint they did nothing too help me. They took 2hrs to give Control Panel access back and insisted I debug Tikiwiki, an open source CMS/WIKI. They gave no help in this and couldn't even give the URL that caused the issue. They insisted I fix and only way I had was to disable Tikiwiki. After doing this it took 6hrs of emails and complaints to get access restored to my static web pages. The site is now up wihout Tikiwiki, just afew static pages, and I am looking for a new hosting service. They did help by providing a backup of the site for me.
Note that this "Suspension" happened exactly 30days after the site went live, a coincidence? Or does it have something to do with 30 day refund guarantee?
There was no warning, no help to resolve the problem, just instant suspension.
This could happen to you!!!
Note TOS is 8% of CPU in 60sec or 4.8sec of CPU. Hostgator is 25% in 90sec or 22sec.
Watch out for Draconian TOS that suspend your site with no warning.
Use Greengeeks if you have a plain vanilla simple html web site with no open source CMS or other code and it's not critical to your business if it's down for a few days.

This is Trey Gardner CEO of Green Geeks responding to Colin's 2nd complaint which Joe in our quality assurance department responded to earlier.

I apologize that his 2nd complaint went unnoticed and therefore unresponded to for a few weeks but I had been traveling the week when Colin first posted his complaint and he posted the 2nd complaint the first day, after Joe made his response here.

First off I take every criticism seriously and my responses here are in no way to try to assuage those complaints' gravity. Obviously complaints about us are going to be one sided and we feel it is appropriate that our version of what transpired be heard so that anyone reading these complaints & responses can make an informed verdict.

This client used an open source product that caused an issue with our server. The open source product is not known for causing issues and therefore we determined that the product was installed improperly, the script caused a problem to the server which per our terms of service we suspended the client's site until we could figure out why this was happening. The client refers to our terms of service in his complaint and compares us to another hosting company:

Note TOS is 8% of CPU in 60sec or 4.8sec of CPU. Hostgator is 25% in 90sec or 22sec.

Let's talk about this comparison for a moment. In a shared server environment the server is running at some level % level of CPU and at peak times the CPU may be higher than at other times. We cap individual CPU loads off at 8% for 60 seconds because we feel that with our server's CPU (especially since we have 8GB of RAM per server) that any site or account that hit's 8% is having some malfunction that could cause a problem for the server if it spikes above that. A spike of 25% for 90 seconds means that the server is badly compromised and all other client sites on that server are running at least 25% slower than they would normally as they would be running at 25% CPU for that bad site plus whatever CPU is being used for all of the other sites running on that site.

Also when you have a 25% spike for 1 site the CPU being used by the other sites actually makes the server work harder for the other shared clients CPU because you have taken away 25% of the capability of the server for those other sites which in turn makes them run even slower. Imagine your heart compromised by an additional 25% than it currently is an how much harder your heart would have to work.

Most of our clients do not get suspended, looking at our stats it happens to .18% of our clients over our history and for most of those clients we are able to pinpoint the issue and work with our clients to rectify the issue. In this client's case even after we addressed the issue with him and identified where their error was they continued to blame us and in life that just happens.

Are we draconian (as Colin labels us) for our practices or are we proactive making sure that everyone's hosting here is stable & reliable? I believe it is good practices to make sure that our servers are stable and reliable for all our clients. A spike of 4% - 8% in our 8GB environment is highly unusual especially for 1 site to have that spike for more than a few seconds and therefore we have instituted policies to make sure we are protecting all of our clients.

As far as a 30 day guarantee and the fact that this client's site was suspended a few days past the 30 day guarantee, I can only say that if we reneged on our 30 day guarantee you would see far more complaints here about that and the fact that you don't (compared to other hosts who do renege on that guarantee) should say something about our practices and our moral compass. We are a good company providing honest services and we do not betray our morals.

I write eBooks for a living and needed a place that could delivery security and a stable hosting environment for people to purchase my books from. Hi, WE recently move dto Greengeeks after reading good reviews here and having had a lot of downtime with previous service.
However this morning Greengeeks just took our web site offline with no warning and want us to pay for dedicated server. We have a simple web site using TikiWiki and a few users, maybe 200 visitors/week but Greengeeks claim we used more than 80% CPU all attributed to tiki-index.php.
This may be true, as tiki-index does keyword site search but it usually only takes a few seconds at most to search the site.
I think they should give us some warning and a chance to look to correct the site.

If you are using open source software and you don't know how much CPU time it will use be careful, your business web site could just disappear without any warning leaving you in a bad situation with your customers.

This isn't acceptable behaviour for a company that wants to retain customers.

Reviewing a company when you're upset is probably the wrong thing to do, but since this isn't the first time that I've had issues, I feel totally justified.

As I sit here at four o'clock in the morning, I'm waiting to hear from customer support to find out why my account with my three little sites has been suspended. My account was paid over a month ago. Two of the sites are in framework stage - one has ten (count 'em) very patient subscribers and the other has none. My primary site is just building up subscriber traffic again because I moved to a new emailing company, and I haven't let everyone know that I'm back online and am ready to receive traffic.

So my account was suspended because of too much server activity. WTF???

This isn't the first time that this happened. I lost my site on several occasions before, all due, I was told, to other customers' problems which brought the servers down. Now, apparently, I'm one of those bad customers with my piddling little sites.

The reason I left my old host was because they did not keep up technologically, and I had occasional issues with getting newest versions of WordPress (and plugins, etc.) to work properly and consistently. When I came to the end of my two-year contract and decided to change, I thought GG would be a good deal. So far, I'm less than ecstatic. While I'm able to implement features that I wasn't able to implement on my old hosts' servers, if nobody can see them, what's the use? I never lost access to my sites EVER with my old host under this type of circumstance, even if I wasn't happy with them on a technological level.

As I read the positive reviews here, I notice that many have reseller accounts. Is that the deal? Sucky service unless you part with the big bucks? I don't have or need a reseller account - I just need my sites (such as they are) to be online and available for my readers.

Unless "being green" is more important than being online, I'd consider another hosting service. Looks like I'm on the hunt again.

Oh, by the way ... I've been with them about a month. And this is the service that I have. Let's just say that the level of trust that something like this won't have happen again if/when I have real traffic is very, very low.

This is Trey Gardner, CEO of Green Geeks responding to Irene's complaint.

First let me say that it is always regrettable when we have to suspend a client's account because it is obviously upsetting to our clients. It is however necessary for us to suspend accounts when they are causing issues on a server so that the other customers on those servers are not compromised by another customers high level of usage.

Second is that we are still currently hosting Irene's web sites (at the time of this posting 3:15pm PST) and that the sites are live and we hope to be able to help Irene and support her web site projects. We do understand Irene's frustration however as we look at why this happened we may better understand how to avoid this in the future.

Irene had her web hosting account temporarily suspended because her sites caused an elevated spike in server load. Irene's sites had an 8% CPU load on the server for over 60 seconds which alerted our server administrators and forced us to suspend her account. Anything above 4% for a period over 30 seconds is a cause of concern for our administrators and anything extending past 60 seconds is a red flag and will prompt an account suspension. Anything over 10% is an immediate red flag and cause for a suspension.

The problem here was not due to the size or bandwidth of Irene's sites size or traffic but was more due to some module or plugin she had for her site as she related to us in ticket ID UQZ-477003

" I guess if I had extreme animations, huge photo galleries or lots of videos, I'd understand. I ran into one problem earlier yesterday, disabled all plugins, and restored them slowly, one by one. When one gave issues, I deleted it. That was yesterday afternoon/evening. And everything was fine until last night/early this morning. The only thing that I'm doing is making sure my site is up and functional ... nothing fancy."

Obviously Irene herself had seen that there were problems on her site prior to the suspension and she was trying to isolate the issue and fix the problem and had thought that she had done so but it had not been fixed and her sites caused a problem on the server prompting us to have to suspend them until they were fixed.

During our time working with Irene to inform her why this happened and what she could do to work through the sites' problems Irene communicated with our top level 3 server admins who informed that she might have some module/plugin installed improperly or that the wordpress script was not the latest most stable version. They also informed here of where to go to learn how to optimize her wordpress blog and make sure that it would not cause server spikes in CPU:

Irene's sites are back online and appears to have found and fixed the issues she was having. Our technicians are here to help our customers find the places they need to learn how to do more with their web site projects and Irene seems to be one of those who can learn how to work the sites properly. For those customers who may want additional help we do advise they find professionals to assist them which in this case would have been wordpress developers and you can easily find directories of developers by doing a google search "wordpress developers".

Irene also in this posting commented about the good reviews on this site by resellers where she was not a reseller. Our service quality is the same in our servers and support representatives for both our shared customers. You can find our server information at:

We invest in high end quality server hardware, software and we have some of the best technical support personnel in the industry. Resellers however may be a bit more gushing about our service because they typically are developers who may have more experience than a typical client and they see just how great our service is.

My decision to host with GreenGeeks was an excellent one. Since day one I have been receiving the service I am paying so low for! The customer service is excellent, the technical support is awesome and the service it self performs the way it is supposed to. I have seen some minor glitches, but they are quickly corrected, nothing that I am concerned about. I recommend these geeks to anyone looking for reliable and friendly hosting!

I signed up for the sprout plan and the plan has been great so far. I have 6 sites that I have added this month with no problems. I can easily install a variety of applications. I've installed Joomla and Wordpress several times no problem.
I have had some problems trying to get Magento working on the server. An auto-install of Magento would be awesome and would save a lot of time!

Customer Service
The Green Geek customer service has replied to me every time w/i 20 minutes. I was quite pleased with the response time of support.
Everyonce and a while I will go through Live Support and they usually get my answer my question; when they cannot they just refer me to support@greengeeks.com.

So overall, things are great. The next thing I am going to try and do is setup shared SSL. We'll see how that goes, considering some of the other comments below.

I have just renewed my subscription with GreenGeeks and thought a 1 year period with them was sufficient for a review. Since signing up with them, I have had nothing but excellent service and actually am very impressed with the quality of service they they provide. It's something that I didn't have at my previous hosting provider (and the reason why I switched). They helped me move my site over, which was painless. Anytime I made the attempt to get in touch with their support, I have always been able to get someone that knew what they were talking about, which is also great! I had an issue with my domain transfer, but they quickly resolved that once it was brought to their attention. In the end, good service, good people, good price. I say go for it, you won't regret it.

I am not a customer just yet, but I will be signing up with GreenGeeks. I am very impressed with the way that Trey Gardner, the CEO addresses complaints about his company. It gives me full confidence that if something does happen, they actually care to look into and resolve any issues that may be outstanding and that's something I have not seen in a lot of the other companies. It almost seems like there is no one even behind those companies.

I'm pretty hopeful that Trey won't be responding to my complaint, but I know if I do have one he'll at least answer my concerns. GreenGeeks is a winner in my book!

Signed up with them a few months ago and have been getting the service that I have paid for. There have been minor hiccups, mostly my fault but they were there each step of the way to help me through my stupidity. It's good to know that there are smart people on the other end. I canceled because of out-of-hours technical support which is mission-critical to me. I needed to sort out a number of problems at the weekend and the support was just not responsive enough.

Previous hosting companies have provided impressive 24/7 customer support via live chat (so you are not waiting hours between emails) but they are not Drupal specialists which is what I needed for this site. The 24/7 support via live chat is only at a very basic level which is mainly regurgitating FAQ links and then asking you to email technical support with anything above that.

A real shame as they seemed a really good ecological web hosting company.

Our tier 3 reps are our server admins. The admins are handling the servers making sure that they are running properly and they are assisting the level 2 technicians with any email issues which may be over the tier 2 reps' heads.

For areas of support which require more research in terms of directing customers on how to do specific functions for their web sites, (like how to modify a specific module within Drupal) due to the fact that research needs to be done on our part to get the correct information to the customer we handle those requests by email because handling them by chat is inefficient. In these instances we request that the customers submit a support ticket request so that our staff who are dedicated to the tickets can concentrate on doing the research and getting the proper information to the customers.

It's also affordable for my clients. Since they introduced their reseller web hosting, I have started offering my customers hosting through their program and have to say I'm quite impressed at the flexibility and features that I get. The level of service and support I get from them is impressive to say the least. I haven't had one of my questions go unanswered and that means a lot to me because I was never strong with hosting. Not sure how has worked with this small company, they may have grate ratings but they have BAD staff with very bad attitudes, I am a reseller with them, I have now been trying to get a restore done of one of my customers.. . the support ticket has been logged 10 hours back, I have phoned them a number of times and they just do not care at all about you or your problems. Spoke to Jonathon he basically told me to bugger off and wait. He will do things when they have time.

Sorry but this is a not how business is done in these hard times.

I wanted to comment on Denny's complaint, I reviewed his ticket to ensure that our technical support department acted appropriately in this manner. Denny's business is in South Africa which is why there was a slight delay in getting back to him, the issue he had in terms of a client backup off the server would need to have a tier 3 admin take care of that. We have admins who are employed around the clock but the after hours admins (Midnight - 8am PST) are employed to take care of the servers and make sure that they are running properly and that the nightly backups are taking place as they should.

As with all our customers and resellers we recommend that they backup their own web site files at every opportunity so that they can have a local backup and to not rely solely on the backups on our servers. We have an FAQ regarding this instructing all our clients to backup to their own machines:

We do take nightly backups of all our servers to ensure that in the event of a server failure that we would have a backup of the entire file system and it is not intended to be a system which will restore one off customer files if for instance they make a mistake in their hosting account, again we recommend that each customer keep a backup of their own files for them to make restores.

Having said that I would like to address the issue of Denny's complaint about Jonathan. Jonathan was an employee who was knowledgable however for was let go from our company. He was let go prior to january 1 2010 which makes Denny's complaint strange since it was posted well over 3 weeks after Jonathan was dismissed. In any event we have continued to communicate with Denny and he remains a reseller customer of Green Geeks.

The quality of service that I have received over the year that I have been with them has been nothing but excellent. Their uptime is terrific, their customer support is always there and responsive. On odd occasions, I do notice their servers get a bit laggy, but within a few seconds it corrects it self. I am not actually sure if it's their servers or my connection. Overall, great service and if you're looking for a reliable, staight forward web host with no frills, then GreenGeeks is the way to go!
