March 23, 2010 Simon ( -no email- ) | I signed onto HM over 3 years ago, originally because it was reasonably priced, and had nice features.
At first, they were great, but things went downhill about a year ago, as their shared servers started to get over-sold. HM jacked up the yearly renewal price, and dropped their "free" anti-spam filter (because it took up too much processing power to filter emails.) Then they introduced CPU throttling without having tested it properly-- my sites were sometimes throttled for no reason. (This has since been cleared up *magically* although my sites haven't changed.)
I suffered through all this, because they seemed to have "real" tech support reps, not outsourced-- and just before I renewed, after repeated complaints from me, they agreed to migrate my account to one of their newer server, since the old one was increasingly slow/crashing. (Yes, they kept customers on failing servers until they were forced to upgrade them.)
But this past week, Hostmonster finally lost me as a customer.
On Friday, without notice or warning, HM decided to do an unannounced system "update" on my hosted server — in the middle of the day (around 1PM central) — which ended up causing the entire server to go down. Over a dozen of my domains, some fairly notable– and an untold number of other customers– went offline without explanation.
When contacted, their tech support initially claimed they would be back up in “30 minutes” after a file integrity check. It wasn’t until over five hours later, that the domains finally returned.
Then, Sunday, same thing -- sites down, this time for only about 30-45 minutes; but again, middle of the day with some generic "file integrity check" notice.
Suffice it to say, that HM isn’t the only game in town at its price point– I’m moving elsewhere.

March 6, 2010 Igor ( fd at seobuilding dot ru ) | I am using hostmonter for 6 months. Everything was OK. Now I installed wiki and got cpu throttling 5-30 second per hour. As I was going to install forum in addition, I applied to hostmonster team. They proposed me high cpu server for $19. After moving I had cpu throttling 500-1500 second per hour. Even after removing wiki and DB I had cpu throttling 30 second per hour. I asked support for help, but nobody even tried to fix something. So $19 server is much more worse than $6 server. Resume: If your project is small, hostmonster is good for you. Otherwise, you should search something else. And advice, do not buy $19 server at hostmonster. It is cheating, move instead to dedicated server.

As my business started to grow the issues with HostMonster became more and more apparent in seing the lack of professionalism and overall knowledge of their customer service and tech support department. Bottomline, they were not able to efficiently handle a growing business with many email accounts and above-average traffic. Their down-time became more constant and their lack of proper customer service became untolerable. They do have a good control panel but not if you are trying to run a successful business or expecting 100% up-time, just not gonna happen with HostMonster.com. I actually thought about legally pursuing this as a claim but not worth my time. Thank you.

Not only were they more knowledgeable than my competition, but they answered the phone in a timely manner. Their prices are well worth every penny, and then some. I had one outage on my MySQL of which they were already working on when I called so essentially highly responsive. My company had some pretty crazy questions related to open source scripting and they were able to answer it in a timely manner. My client needed additional ram, and they happily supplied me with it. I did not get even close to this good of service with 1&1 or Technolojik despite higher prices. With these guys you're not just getting good hosting you're getting a wealth of knowledge included. I would reccomend them to anybody who wants good shared hosting.

July 3, 2009 Bitso ( bitso(at)trash2009(dot)com ) | wow where to start. the prices are low for the first year and are a really good deal. But they do that only because they want to lure you in - the regular price is considerably higher and not worth it all considering the limitations they impose.
The initial price is rock bottom at cost to them because they want you to host with them, and then to get trapped in with them because you agreed to min 1-2 years of hosting (1 year at discount rate, 2nd year at full rate). They also bank on lazy or inexperienced webmasters hosting their site and then not knowing how to move their site and thus continuing to host with hostmonster at their regular rate (which is much higher).
They have really bad data limits meaning that even though they offer large amounts of bandwidth they won't let you use it. If you come near anything close to your bandwidth limit or anything higher than a 20+ gigs - they'll cancel your hosting without giving you warning or money back. If you get accidentally dugg or made it on to a social site or get popular overnight prepare to not only have your account suspended (they redirect your site to a nice suspended page that is optimized for their own seo advantage). If you want to be re-enabled prepare to have them upsell you on premium level hosting - that some webmasters agree to just so they can get their site back up and profit from the social network popularity boost.
Dreamhost is a headache, if you get sucessfull they will suspend your account. They stand to profit by you failing or or your site not doing well - for the less resources you use, the more they can upsell to others. Servers are shared on the regular rate, and they routinely offer all sorts of low prices initially to get you in and ordering. They will auto-charge your card - and the scary part is that few people talk back against them because most of the people promoting hostmonster get a commission by referring people- so they try to conceal the ugly truth.
There's a reason why they're #1 on many host reviews - because the link out to the sites redirects through an affiliate link and the owner of the host review site gets a commission for each order/sale.

The guy quit my chat MANY times. The price is good, that's why i almost signed up to their package, but luckily I didn't because with the kind of support i get before I purchase, I can't imagine what will it be like once I've paid for it.
Worst, when I went to their support forum, few people there are so stuck up that they just scold me back for making such remark. (hostmonsterforum.com). I hope they will improve their support in the near future. No comment on other stuffs as I was treated like shit when I almost sign up for their package

I then get an email saying they had deducted $107 from my credit card! What happened to their $6.95 per month and why didn't they tell me the amount would be a lot higher. I emailed them asking why this was so much higher ($8.90) and the reply I got was this:
Last year, due to customer requests, we purchased additional equipment of higher quality. We also needed to increase our staff and hire on additional developers. The staff change was to prevent long hold times, and assure quick and accurate customer service. We spent a great deal of money and time on a better accounting system, so that we could prevent human error in account activities. Due to all of the changes, we had to increase our rates. We have kept our prices the same for about five years, but could no longer do so with the changes we've made for our customers.
I wrote back saying that I understood that prices increase but they should have had the professionalism and courtesy to inform me before deducting this off my credit card! They then apologized and asked me to contact their feedback department who would look into it. Their feedback department simply sent me a link to a page with these higher rates and wrote:
We didn't make any official price changes. You paid the promo rate when you signed up. I did say " You can still get a 6.95 rate if you're willing to renew for longer." ++ facts and figures!
Did I forget to mention that it had to be for 3 years! Another clause I find is that should I decide to cancel and move over to another host we forfeit the FREE domain registration!
I would highly recommend NOT using Hostmonster. Purchase a domain with GoDaddy and seek an alternate host. And to think we have another few sites with them!

April 18, 2009 HostMonster Customer ( noreply[at]please[dot]com ) | This server promises unlimited space and bandwidth but when your site gets popular they will close your site without notification and will ask you to remove some your PhP scripts. I have few month left with them and then I am planing to move somewhere better server.

I always get the same reply from tech. that they are aware of this issue and it will take around 20 minutes. I kindly informed them that this has been going on for weeks! The first 2 times I was ignored and the last was suggested to look at another host organization with dedicated servers! My website is around 25 pages with very little traffic. Perhaps they should have said this before taking my money and place on their home page that they have server problems! Bad support! Seek elsewhere (as recommended by them if you want good server up-time)!

March 10, 2009 andrew ( andrew at orchidmarketing dot com ) | Their cheap plan is just that - very limited once you really start using it you realise that it does not have the features etc - so you have to buy these and they add cost - this has made them more expensive than several other better hosts I have used.
Uptime used to be good but lately things have gone off the boil and we are continually discovering issues. They also have a cavalier attitude to service. (IMHO)

January 10, 2009 Hugo ( hanil405[at]yahoo[dot]com ) | I hosted with them for over a year now. Same script same database same avarage number of visitors . Suddenly in 2009 they just suspended my account saying I am using too much resources and I need to fix my script. They did not give me even a notice just removed my website which is a simple business directory.
I don not recommend them if you are planing to grow and have couple hundred visitors.
They will be happy to host your html only website without database but if you need for half the price I will give you a webhost for that.
AVOID HOSTMONSTER IN 2009 or try and balme only yourself.
