I had a client with an ecommerce store hosted with this company for over THREE YEARS and is now gone. They didn't receive the going out of business notice and therefore didn't make any backups.
The site is completely unrecoverable, the didn't receive notification that there was going to be a shift in "management", but basically this company was and continues to be useless beyond repair.
The upside is that we were not stupid enough to register our domain name with OnSmart so we were able to retain at least that much.
Tech Support and Customer Service is non-existent even with their "new" management and we were basically told through their crappy chatline that there was nothing that could be done to recover anything, because the old management was not cooperating and not returning phone calls, but oh, we could sign up for a new hosting plan.
Give me a break!!!!
I hope other business owners were not as misfortunate as mine.

They just renewed my contract for two website and disabled services. Now my websites are down. Can we take a legal action against this company?

F.Y.I Onsmart isn't technically going out of business they are changing the name of their company and starting a new one.
I didn't proceed all the way but it looks as if you can still sign up for a hosting plan. They also make no mention about going out of business on their site..... Sandy, Peter & Gilles are a real bunch of winners! Onsmart is AWFUL!
Choose your next host with caution!

I thought we had until March before our websites were out of service, but I got up today and mine is totally inaccessible. Not only that, ever since OnSmart notified us that they are going out of business I've been slammed with waves of spam. It appears they've removed any spam filters they had. Additionally, I believe their servers are unsecure now and I have a strong suspicision that my website has been hacked into. Too bad, OnSmart gave good service up until the end. They really let us down.

This whole affair with this company going out of business is incredible and should be a warning to all of us who select hosting companies that do not have any real phone support.
The big question is why is their website still up? Are these folks so criminal that they cannot even take the site down? Shame on EnomCentral.com for allowing this to happen. We all know about the hardware issues that OnSmart was having. If this was indeed EnomCentrals hardware, this would be a company I would stay away from as well.

Hello,
My domain and hosting was also threw onsmart.com. I discovered that OnSmart.com was actually a reseller of EnomCentral.com. I was able to contact Enom using their Customer Care Center (CustomerCare@Enom.com). This was the reply:
The following transfer options are available:
1. transfer your domain only for $29.95, this will add an addition year to your domain once moved to eNom
or
2. Get your domain and hosting. Pay $9.99 for the domain and a low $5.96 a month for hosting when bundled with our annual hosting.
The reps there were very easy to work with and I was able to get my domain name COMPLETLY in my control. I would recommend their service to anybody trying to recover their domain names. I was able to get back up and running in less than a day.
Best of luck to everybody. I’m so happy to be back up!

Anybody who needs to transfer a domain name from onSmart should contact eNom.com!!!
(eNom is the parent of onSmart and can help you transfer your domain registration from onSmart)
Shame on onSmart abandoning their customers hanging while they go out of business.

What a mess. I got through yesterday using that phone number and they answered by simply saying "Hello" as well. They got my site back up and running but wouldn't let me speak with anyone about billing issues - instead instructing me to call back today when someone could assist with those issues. Calling back today resulted in reaching the generic mailbox.
I pressed the individual to tell me whether onsmart was going out of business. At first all he would say is that he is not allowed to discuss these matters. After repeated questioning he answered very quietly, "yes, next month." i am transferred to a new host who supports lots of the same Linux features as onsmart and uses cpanel all the same. They even moved everything from onsmart for me, including my databases. Siteground.com - check it out. They will even reimburse you for up to 6 months of lost hosting elsewhere....

Our 3 websites also fell of the earth on Saturday, but I did call the 877 phone number mentioned in a review below. Yesterday they did not answer at all (went to an unidentified voice mail box) but today they answered with just "hello." I talked to the person on the phone and asked to have my webfiles so I could put them on a different server. He promised my site would be back up in 15 minutes. BTW, he also claimed nothing was wrong with OnSmart, that they weren't out of business and my server just need to be reset. I believe that's total BS, but what can I do. One of my sites was up in 15 minutes, but the ftp transfer was broken so I just printed my pages on a printer so I had the basic content to reference as we rebuild I site in the next few days. \I just wanted to let you know that it's worth trying to call the number to see if anyone will answer even if you've already tried before and got nowhere - 877-377-7520. Good luck.

Our site, too, dropped off the face of the planet along with another's site here in town.
It would be nice, if nothing else, if I could get the email off of the site that had everyone's contact information.
They have a support number, but, good luck getting it to work:

OnSmart dropped off the face of the earth. Lost 2 of my sites, and have 10 others that I just renewed. They owe me over $1,000. I'd like to know if I'll be seeing any of the money back.
The email sent to all clients has a link to get temporary help, but even that link is broken. They're not answering at help@onsmart.net either.
Here's the letter they sent to everyone:
Dear OnSmart Network Customer, Due to the difficulty in web hosting industry, we decided to close our business in March, 2008. In order to help our customers to transfer out to other web hosting provider. We have open a temporary help desk at http://help.onsmart.net/center/contact to keep track each transfer issue. Sorry for the inconvenience. Jacky OnSmart Network htttp://www.onsmart.net/

Onsmart used to be great now the service is just useless, none of the support options work now. 3 out of my 10 websites hosted there aren't working and there is no way to get the backup from them now. So I just lost a lot of money.
Is there a way to take legal action? I want my money back and my websites they have.
Useless , don't even touch it.

CAUTION!
This company has gone out of business as of January 31, 2008. Used to have good support and reasonable response time. They've collected my recent renewals, disabled their support, billing console and other services. One of my websites is still functional, two of them have no email anymore. All of them still have cpanel access but as things break or servers hang, there's nobody behind the curtain anymore to fix it.
If you have a site hosted by them, download full backups right away and seek new hosting.
Very unprofessional way to end a business.

Have to move three commercial domains away. NO way to get in touch with service & two out of three sites are now DOWN -
Good way to completely destroy a company! No one will touch them again when they refuse to communicate or post any notices about problems and attempts to resolve difficulties!

I have been using onSMART every since i can remember. Like everyone I too recently more than ever been having problems and no, the customer support live chat is not good anymore. As someone else said, there are HUGE delays in between the chats due to the fact they are speaking to 100 people on the live chat at the same time. In the middle of my chat, the representative, either Gillz, or Peter, or Sandy or whoever it was was giving me the solution to another clients problem that he had on another window, and when he saw the mistake there was a "sorry message" and then another huge delay. I have pulled out 98% of my sites from them. The billing system is corrupt, no more live support, these small signs are of a company you don't want to invest your money too. I personally have moved to lunarpages. who can beat 1.5 Terra for 100$!!?

26 Jan 2008 Yep, similar problems here, no response. Email has stopped working, no live help, support tickets haven't worked in a while, I pay on the yearly subscription, was renewed in Oct, so I hate losing all that money but I've got to change to get email working.
Do not use Onsmart, they have just gotten worse and worse.

ALL MY SITES have been DOWN since 1/19/2008.
They don't answer phone
They don't answer fax
Their support page shows an error "ERROR: Invalid License Key (Time Period Expired)"
Their "Click for Live Help Link" never responds.
I tried to find another phone number and the information I found was not good for the address listed.

I have the Linux hosting plan
This company is going down hill fast. They used to be great... I have set-up 3 accounts with them and a friend who uses them all the time is also becoming concerned. Something is really messed up a large percentage of emails sent to me from various addresses are now rejected by their server and I am receiving phone calls from numerous people saying they can no longer email me. Onsmart refuses to address the issues and has been extremely rude and unhelpful. The error messages clearly say they are rejected by them.. go figure?????
I switched hosts (did not have a choice) and I am now receiving flawless performance. Peter one of the Reps closed a chat window on me after replying with a rude comment and Sandy then came on with no greeting and took forever between replies. Personally I have done nothing wrong but unfortunately they do not feel that way. You get the feeling they sit around complaining about you when you have a problem. Here is the chat log right after being "hung up" on by Peter. Save yourself the hassle they are the most unreliable host I have ever dealt with and have the worst customer service.
Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Sandy'
Sandy: hi (note there was a long pause here)
myname: Hi there... I was in the middle of talking to Peter and then it said chat ended?
Sandy: ok (even longer pause here)
myname: I am sure you are getting frustrated with me but I am really trying to find out why I am receiving numerous calls ect why people cannot send emails to me?
Sandy: Please hold while I check on it.. (they always say this and do nothing)
myname: thanks
Sandy: I've send email to xxxx@xxxx.com
Sandy: and its deliverd properly
Sandy: here are logs from server
Sandy: 2007-11-14 13:29:58 removed for privacy
myname: Thanks I realize that. I can send emails to myself aswell. But am not sure why all of a sudden people who regularly email me get these error messages along with new people. I know it is easy to blame them which I would love it if it was the case.
myname: Do you know why it may be happening to them?
Sandy: or our server IP address blocked in their network
Sandy: so many reasons not to get emails
myname: I know but honestly if you had an email address you have been using for almost a year and then 5+ of people you know say "hey I can no longer send you emails..." wouldn't you be concerned? I'm not trying to be difficult I really don't think this is their problem but just don't know what to do...
myname: I haven't received your email yet either...
myname: ok I just received your email... (like 5 minutes later)
Sandy: did you check xxxx@..
myname: just got it
Sandy: humm..
Sandy: ok
myname: I understand this is a weird problem I am sorry. I am sure you feel that everything is working but I honestly don't believe it is. I appreciate your time but as of now my emails don't work all the time.... can you contact me if you find anything cause clearly this isn't going anywhere...
myname: I think I may need to find another host if this persists.... see ya
Sandy: did you check through webmail
Sandy: ok
myname: I tried that
Sandy: ok
myname: They werent there either
myname: if you find out anything just let me know. thanks
they usually end saying thank you for contacting onsmart blah blah blah
