| | Alentus Acquires Two Web Hosts - April 23, 2008 - Web hosting provider Alentus (alentus.com), which is owned by Web hosting equity firm EnActen, announced on Wednesday that it has acquired Linux-based Web hosting providers Website Source (websitesource.com) and SpeedFox (speedfox.com). The financial details of the cash and stock transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 1998 and based in Austin, Texas, Website Source and its subsidiary SpeedFox, which was founded in 2002, offer Linux-based shared hosting, virtual private servers, dedicated servers, e-commerce and domain registration services. Website Source operates a Cisco-powered data center facility in Austin and manages over 200 servers, says the press release.
Alentus says that the acquisition immediately adds $2.6 million in annual revenue to its current long-term profitable operations record and will add an additional 14,000 clients to its client portfolio. The current Website Source infrastructure is being integrated into the Alentus global, redundant Cisco-powered network and all Texas staff has been retained, says Alentus.
"This acquisition provides a stable and solid addition of Linux powered Web hosting to the Alentus client base," says William King, CEO of Alentus. "And at the same time, it offers Windows hosting options to Website Source and SpeedFox clients. We are pleased with how the companies complement one another and look forward to growing our client base by offering a more complete menu of website hosting services to the Internet community."
As a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner that focuses on premium Windows based hosting services, Alentus provides dedicated services to thousands of customers including Fortune 500 firms and offers a range of hosting services to enterprise services such as managed converged voice, unified messaging, WAN connectivity, colocation and dedicated Internet connectivity solutions. The company is based in Laguna Niguel, California with data center and network operation centers in Edmonton, Canada and Columbus, Ohio.
In Februrary, Alentus acquired the data center and managed services clients of AO Technologies for an undisclosed amount.

April 14, 2009 s sausedo ( ssausedo(at)excite(dot)com ) | DO NOT SIGN UP WITH SPEEDFOX!
I have have been fairly happy with speedfox overthe last couple of years and have had pretty good support when an occasional problem occurred but, over the last few months, they have nose-dived out of control it seems.
A few months back the servers became infected and all of my sites got flagged by Google. I had not uploaded any infected files myself but because it is shared hosting my sites became "Know Malicious/dangerous sites and I was notified by clients - the damage was done. I then had to take time out to check all of the content on my sites just to be certain there were no infected files and then to submit requests to Google to check my site again and remove it from the "bad wed sites" flagging in the Google index.
Shortly after this I could not get any email for almost a week and everything was bounced back saying "it did not exist" during this period. I could not get anyone from support via phone OR chat and finally, after multiple attempts, I was able to get a support ticket submitted through the system. Also, they lost ALL of the incoming mail for the entire week. There was no source of capturing email in the system during this period - VERY poor system management and design.
When they supposedly got it up and running I still was having problems authenticating with the mail servers. I also noticed that none ofmy admin tools in the control panel were working pproperly either.
Now, the last couple of days, I have been unable to get my formmail working. I have set this up for many clients and have no problems on any server but SPeedfox. This time I cannot get any tech service by phone - no humans at all and the message system will not even TAKE a phone message because the MAILBOX IS FULL, Chat is not available , I cannot log into my control panel AT ALL to do any work, I cannot even GET the helpdesk/support page on the Speedfox web site to come up so that I may submit a request for support. Virtually the ONLY think I can do is upload files - amazing!
WARNING: I think it is time to bail because I get the impression that these guys are quickly sinking if they are already not out of business.

April 13, 2009 Amy ( orders(at)somethinginviting(dot)net ) | I've been with Speedfox for 5 years. At first, they were a great company but recently they are terrible. Customer service is a joke. They reply, but nothing gets fixed. My site and/or my email have been down about 5 of the past 8 weeks. When I sent an email to support to let them know that their support ticket feature wasn't working, I got a somewhat rude reply that information regarding technical issues was sent to my email. That would have been helpful if my email had actually been working at the time. I've had enough of them - moved to a new server today.

April 6, 2009 Jim Dietrick ( pinballrevival at comcast dot net ) | My website is down, and has been for 3 days, and no form of help is available from Speedfox. Call are directed to a mailbox where no one is available. Attempts at live chat support result in a time out saying live chat is not available. There is no message on their homepage! I may contact a lawyer - this is seriously affecting my business! I am absolutely switching to a different host! STAY AWAY FROM SPEEDFOX!!!!

April 1, 2009 Al Kalar ( alkalar[at]kalarwade[dot]com ) | The service is actually getting worse. Especially the email client.
All email was down from March 18 through March 23.
Today, April 1 (how appropriate), the SMTP server is down.
At least they have a web page where you can see what's going on.
Since they host thousands of sites, I'm surprised that more people aren't taking their ire to the Internet review sites such as this one.
BTW, the problems seem to have started after they were acquired by Alentus (who also own Website Source in the USA and others in the UK and Canada).
I'm still looking for a replacement host, but they all seem to suck. And price doesn't seem to be an indicator of quality (you don't always get what you pay for). If someone out there knows of a reliable Linux or Unix host (and you don't work for them, but have been a client for at least a year), please tell me. We're getting desperate for a new "home".

December 4, 2008 Al Kalar ( alkalar[at]vikingwaters[dot]com ) | Follow-up on previous review:
Speed Fox is having major problems. A client's DB based site has been up and down (mostly down) for the past 3 days, an intolerable situation. Email has been down hard for all 4 of my clients who are hosted there. HTML only pages come up just fine. I suspect they are having trouble with a DB server and Email may be on that server as well. Given the number of clients they have, it's possible they only have two or three servers devoted to their Speed Fox operation.
Problems are only addressed during the day which makes me suspect that everyone goes home in the evening and 24/7 service is a myth. Phone calls are useless because "that party is not currently available" according to their phone system's electronic condom.
I think Speed Fox is owned and hosted by a larger hosting company in the same building, so this is an unforgivable situation.
I'm looking for a new host for my clients. One that actually has a good "up time" record.

December 1, 2008 Al Kalar ( alkalar[at]vikingwaters[dot]com ) | Overall, Speed Fox does what it says. Lots of space for multiple sites. Email facilities are spacious, although on the 3-star plan, you're limited to 5 mailing lists. Also, if you make up your lists on your email software (such as Outlook), you're limited to around 30 names (an anti-spam feature that can be a bit frustrating if you have a LOT of friends you send jokes to). They have a large list of freeware scripts you can use for eCommerce, blogs, forums, and such. If you don't see what you want, you can always install your own scripts (such as WordPress).
Downside: The email function goes down regularly although mostly for a short period. Lately, they've been having database problems and no one in tech support is available on the phone which kinda sucks (probably scrambling to figure out a fix). Recently both of our databases (ecommerce and a blog) went down in the evening and as of now (early morning) they're still down. Just to make problems worse, the email function is dead as well (both SMTP and online) although basic pages still work. I suspect a router problem that involves db and mail servers.
The downtime is becoming annoying (especially since it's happening during the Christmas shopping season) and seems to be an escalating situation. I'd say "you get what you pay for" except that our last host, which was more expensive, had similar problems.
Moral: If you want 100% uptime, go to a host that maintains mirror sites and multiple Tier One Internet suppliers with terrabit "pipes".
